Bios recognizing CD/DVD ROM as CD/DVD RAM

I replaced the original equipment DVD RW on my dimension e510 with an LG unit.  I could not get it to burn anything.  It wouldn't even start.  When I go into the the (rather nice) admin tool for the supplied burn software (NERO) it indicated that the new drive was read only, no write capability.

It is connected SATA-2 and is recognized from within Windows.

I looked into the bios and sure enough, it says it is CDRAM, all the other info looks right.  I updated the bios, no change.

So basically, everything I look at says it is CDRAM and non writeable.

Hi, Waffle:

It sounds as though you replaced the original IDE drive with an SATA drive, correct? What's the model of the new drive? Did you go to the Nero site and update the software after you installed it?

Actually, now I will have 2 burners (took out the old DVD player).  I did reinstall the NERO software, but I also have 2 other burn softwares and both of them also refuse to start/seem to think it is a read/no write system

the new burner is an LG Model document.write(neg_specification_newline('GH20NS15'));GH20NS15

I am connected via the mother board SATA connection (had one left).  So currently I have

HD - SATA 1

SATA 1 - Older Dell supplied DVD RW

SATA 2 - New LG DVD RW

I still find it interesting that even at the BIOS level it is identified is DVD RAM and within windows and within NERO the same way

Thanks so much for your help on this

Your LG is a DVD-RAM drive (±RW and RAM). This is pretty common for new drives, even as the RAM standard seems to be less common.

Did you check the Nero site for any updates?
