Blu Ray driveHL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N will not work

The above player plays DVD's but not blu ray disks.  It had worked but now it is not working.  When running the Dell Support Centre optical drive tests I get these error messages below.

Do I have a faulty Blu ray drive?

Yes this is now resolved. Cyberlink said I should go ... update the lates patch released on 2012-05-10 build 1618 from the link given below :

www.cyberlink.com/.../patches_en_US.html

No this did not work.

I did managed to fully uninstall all the cyberlink software, run CCleaner for cleaning up the registry files and I found a suggestion of uninstalling the . Uninstall all Microsoft Redistributable packages found in "Programs and Features"

Reinstalling the software from the web or CD will reinstall the MS packages.  What I did notice that from the disk there was a couple of set up screens that was not showing when I did a full download from the web.  I know there is one patch I can install with out any trouble and that from the above site is.

2012-03-27

Updates: This file updates PowerDVD 12 to PowerDVD 12 build 1514.

But you know what I am not going to try and bother for the moment.

I hope the above may help you in helping others.

Regards

Hi SKGurney,

Those errors do not indicate a problem with the drive, but that you did not have any disc in the drive to run the respective tests. Please insert a blu ray disc in the drive and try the test again.

Hi Osprey

Thank you for your suggestion.  No the disk was in at all times.  I had since noticed that when putting a disk in the drive and looking at the drives in my computer the icon does not change.  It is simply not reading it.  I have since phoned Dell and they are sending out a replacement drive for me as it is under warranty.

Thanks for coming back to me

Stephen

Sounds like it's time for a new drive, my friend. Especially since it was working and now seems to have stopped recognizing blu ray discs. Are you still under warranty?

Yes it is under warranty and I now have a replacement drive.  But.  I can do play DVD's and do the Blu Ray diagnostic tests (Dell Support centre tests) and they all pass.  But now I get these two error messages when attempting to read blu ray disks. Via Cyberlink power dvd 12.

First one:

Cyberlink Power DVDcannot access the storage device.  Select another device when playback stops.

Secondly after clicking ok to the above.

The integrity of Cyberlink Power DVD is at risk.  Check your anit-Virus software for malicious activities or try reinstalling Cyberlink Power DVD.

???

I have put this question to Cyberlink.  I have uninstalled the software and re-insalled it as per cyberlinks instructions.  I have also used CCleaner to do a registry clean but no help there.

Good game this!!!

You're right there. Cyberlink is buggy and blu ray is even more so.

That error, of course, does not actually tell you what the problem is. Only that PowerDVD can't figure out what the problem is.

Please try this utility. It will tell you if there are system problems in general.

That utility just shows that by PC and drives are capable of running a blue ray disk.  Everything passed!

Since there is no problem with the drive, I don't really have any more ideas. I think the Cyberlink forum would be the best place to get help. Keep in mind they are sometime reluctant to help customers who use OEM versions, such as Dell provided to you. You might have to dance around that issue to get help.

Please post back and let me know if you get this resolved. I'm a little behind on the versions of PowerDVD, so I try to keep track of how things like this get fixed.

With any blu ray program, updates are just as likely to break the program as fix it. So I recommend you not do any update unless you are having a specific problem that the update is said to fix.
