C600 DVD/CD combo drive not functioning properly.

I have a Latitude C600 and it has the Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2502. My problem is that everytime I stick a CD or DVD into it, it ccmes up with the message, "The disk in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" and even if I click 'Yes' it says, "The disk in drive D cannot be formatted." My questions is what should I do?

Same problem, I bought the C600 useda month ago. I can sometimes get the it to read a data CD after I view a DVD, eject it, and then insert a CD. Running Windows 2000 Pro. I've been searching this web site for hours, anyone got any ideas?

I also have a C600 Latitude lap top. Do not remember if the DVD ever read a DVD when I first received the unit. Since a SW reload it has never read a DVD, CD are OK.

Today I found the flash firmware upgrade 1D23 and it went in the first time, but DVD's are still a foreign media in the player. Scoured the Toshiba and Microsoft sites looking for c2502 but nothing. Does anyone have a working DVD ROM drive? Better yet has anyone ever got one working and will they share what the did to get it to function.

I am running W2K SP 4.

Let me jump on this bandwagon as well. DVDs play fine but I can't get it to read CDs. If I flip my laptop upside down it reads the CD sometimes. Don't ask why I even attempted that heh.

This is a very common problem with the C2502.  Do a google search for "toshiba c2502 won't read cd" and you'll see what I mean.  Although some people have had a little luck by judiciously cleaning the laser lens, the only real solution is to replace the drive.

I also had a 2502 that read DVDs but would not read any CDs.  It used to read CDs, but not anymore.

In diagnosing the problem, I tried DOS, Win98, WinME, Win2000, and WinXP.  It didn't matter.  The 2502 read DVDs under all OS's, and didn't read CDs under any of them.

I swapped drives around amongst 4 different laptops (three different models).  Three of the CD/DVD drives worked in all four laptops.  The 2502 didn't work in any of them.

I tried flashing to three different firmware versions--1D13, 1D23, and a hacked XD23 firmware (the hack was for region-free DVDing, not for our problem).  None made any difference (though I didn't really think it would).

These tests proved that it was a hardware problem with my Toshiba SD-C2502 drive.  Not Windows, not software (driver), not firmware, not the laptop.

In rummaging around the internet, I came across many other discussion groups with complaints about the same problem with the C2502--DVDs read ok, but CDs don't read.  It's curious that the earliest complaints I found began about late-2004/early-2005, but I didn't find anything earlier.

According to docs at toshiba.com, the SD-C2502 first shipped in 2000.  If this was an original design defect, there should have been problem reports back then.  The latest firmware (1D23) is dated 2002.  If this was a firmware problem, it should have shown up earlier.  Since problems began showing up years later, my guess is that it's some kind of early degeneration of the hardware.  My 2502 used to read CDs, but doesn't any more.  I think we will continue hearing from more 2502 users as their drives begin to fail.

I don't believe this is repairable.  Replace the drive.  But I would stay away from getting another refurb'd 2502.

Thanks for the info, sounds like you spent a LOT of time on this. Do you have a suggestion for a reliable replacement?

I don't think I've worked with enough others to form any opinions.  I have three C600's at home that all were previously equipped with C2502's.  One is still working okay, but the other two suffered this exact fate--DVD-okay, CD-no read.  I replaced one with a Toshiba C2612, and the other with a LG 8080B.  Those both work fine, but who knows . . . so did the 2502's up until about a year ago.

During the past year, I've noticed similar "CD-no-read" reports about a smattering of other DVD/CD brands and models, though not in the same numbers as 2502 problems.  OTOH, perhaps the 2502 was used more widely over the past 5 years, and with more in circulation a higher number of failures would be natural.  (I don't know if that's true, but it does seem like there are a lot of 2502s around.)

My view is that they'll all probably die sooner than we'd like.  They're tiny and not as rugged as desktop drives, and while some may die sooner than others, they'll all die.  The next one of mine that dies will be replaced with a DVD/CDRW instead of another plain DVD/CD.  While DVD burners are still relatively expensive, DVD/CDRW combos have become attractively priced.  I have other laptops with DVD/CDRWs, and the added convenience is worth paying a little extra for, especially if getting another plain DVD/CD is going to just be stalling for time.

Do you have the drivers for the LG DRN8080B?  I have a Latitude C600 that recognizes the drive as an LG DVD-ROM DRN8080B in WinXP Pro Device Manager but it only installs the generic Microsoft cdrom.sys driver from 7/1/2001.  Dell does not offer the drivers on their website, just a firmware upgrade at:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R62202&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4N_4150&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2316&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&fileid=79954

I tried to do the upgrade but it gave a message that there was no drive inserted.

The drive reads CDs OK but says "Please insert disk" when a DVD is inserted.
