CD/DVD ROM drive only reading certain DVDs

Hello everyone,

Peculiar problem here... I went and bought a DVD last night and popped it in both my laptop and my desktop and the DVD wouldn't read. I returned the DVD thinking it was faulty and got a different copy of it. When I tried this copy of the DVD, it still wouldn't play in either my laptop or desktop. I tried several other DVDs and they play just fine, then I tried some game discs and they read fine as well. What is the cause of this problem and how might I be able to fix it? My desktop is an XPS 720 with (according to the Device Manager) a PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S SCSI CdRom Device and my laptop is an Inspiron N7010 with an HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT32N DVD/CD-ROM drive. Both are running Windows 7 64-bit. The movie I bought (in case anyone was watching) is The Dictator DVD copy.

Apparently "The Dictator" has some novel new copy protection.

That would be very infuriating if that were the case, considering I've always used my laptop as my DVD player.

I think it is the case ... you might want to check on AVS Forums' HTPC area for possible solutions.

Or, you could download a trial version of Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater 5 to determine if it's the player software that's at fault. The TMT 5 is fully functional for fifteen days.

DVDFab and AnyDVD were just updated to circumvent problems with this disc.

DVDFab, AnyDVD, and Arcsoft TotalMediua Theater 5 had no luck. It's as if the drive itself just won't read the DVD period. It sounds like it's spinning, then it just stops. It does this several times before it completely quits. I popped in some other DVDs and they worked just fine. Still no luck...

I've encountered the problem you describe before ... two years ago I bought a used audio CD and it wouldn't play in an LG drive that would play other audio CDs. Recently, I tried the same CD in a Samsung Blu-ray drive and it worked fine.

However, you say the disc won't play in your desktop, either, which leads me to suspect it's an issue with the disc.

Perhaps I could try returning the disc and picking up the copy that is on Blu-ray/DVD and try that out. I will give that a try next and get back with you. I just watched a few other DVDs today without any issues. I read that this particular movie, along with The Hunger Games seems to be giving alot of people issue. Silly, making copyright protection that makes watching a video completely impossible. For the record, we popped it in an Xbox 360 and a PS3 with no results, either.
