CD/DVD ROM not working

The internal CD/DVD-ROM Drive of my Dell Inspiron 580 is not working while an external CD/DVD Drive works fine. Please advise me whether I should replace the internal one.

Hi Victor,

Welcome to the Community.

I would suggest you to run diagnostics on the computer before replacing the CD/DVD drive.

1. Restart the computer and tap F12 key to access One Time Boot Menu

2. Highlight Boot to Utility Partition and hit Enter to start the diagnostics

Dear Manshu,

All test passed on CDROM/DVD but test on Hard Drive failed (Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test).

I ran custom test on CDROM/DVD ( All tests passed ) and on Hard Drive (Error code: 0F00:1344)

Please advise me what to do next.

Hi Victor,

Thank you for the reply.

Error code: 0F00:1344 indicates hard drive issue. I would suggest you to backup important data if the computer is booting to Windows as the hard drive may stop working anytime.

As you mentioned that the test on CD/DVD drive has passed, I would suggest you to test the CD/DVD drive outside operating system as well. Unplug the external CD/DVD drive and insert the Operating System (Windows 7 or Vista) disk you got with the system in the internal drive. Restart the system and tap F12 key to access One Time Boot Menu. Highlight CD/DVD and start tapping Enter. If the system Boots to the setup of operating system, CD/DVD drive is working properly and it is an issue within the Operating System.

If the issue is within the Operating System, I would suggest you to perform System Restore for the date the internal drive was reading disks properly. Please click the link mentioned below for instructions on System Restore:
