You do not need to uninstall the burning software (Sonic/Roxio).
Sonic acquired Roxio and they are now the same.

Delete the Upperfilers and Lowerfilters per the Microsoft article
to bring back the drive.  Then if the burning software fails
to function, reinstall Sonic at that time.

Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Microsoft article
or run the ulility below the picture in this article here ......

Thanks Skybird for responding, but I don't think I'm following. I'm not having problems with Roxio software, I'm having problems with my CD/DVD not responding and getting a Code 39 errors. I just mentioned the Roxio software because the Microsoft article mentioned about uninstalling it and I wanted to make sure that the Sonic software I have from Dell would be what I would use to reinstall if need be.

So what you are saying is by going to http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=106 and running the "UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry Removal utility" this should restore my CD/DVD function and get rid of the Code 39 errors next to them in the device manager? After this, if the Roxio software doesn't function, use the Sonic CD I have and reinstall?

Sorry for sounding so "Duh", but I just wanted to make sure I'm following you before proceeding. Thanks again.

You got it.  The Utility at tacktech.com will do what
the Microsoft article does (delete the Filters).
The Filters should correctly write after a reboot,
thus restoring the drive.

Sometimes the burning software will require reinstallation
afterward.  The Sonic disc you have will do that if you
need to do it.

Hi from a new member, magicbelle

Interesting that my XPS 400 is having the same problem, and it just started 2 days ago, worked one day, the next disappeared!   However, I have tried all of the suggested "fixes" and alas nothing works.  And, the major bummer is that I can't find my resourse disc.  I have done a Utility partition, diagnostics for the CDRW and DVDRW and they both passed the entire test.  However, they do not show up on "my computer" and when I downloaded the CDRW driver R109788 "it" could not find the CDRW to install.

Any suggestions?  Have worked at this for 10 hours now and really would love to have both my CD & DVD players back to play with!

Thanking you in advance,

magicbelle

Thanks Skybird and Pudgyone for the advice. Sorry I haven't responded until now, I had a death in the family and the last thing on my mind was my CD/DVD... I'm sure you understand. I did as suggested and everything is working fine now and my Roxio is still doing fine... I didn't have to reinstall. Thank you for all your help in resolving this. You have been a tremendous help!

Thanks again,

SistaJ

I am having the exact same problem. Mine started after I installed a Lifecam VX3000. I have tried deleting the upper & lower filters & unplugging the drives themselves.

If I uninstall the drives & reinstall it finds the hardware & says "Windows can not load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupt or missing (Code 39)".

If I try  to update the driver it says "The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.

I'm using Windows Xp

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!
