Hi Bill,
If the drive is indeed a DVD-ROM or DVD/RW, then yes you will need decoding software. Windows Media Player will not work with a third party decoder. Two we see the most recommended is PowerDVD & WinDVD.

Best Regards

Hi Mike, had a brief moment of piece at work and got lucky ...lol

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

In order to play commercial DVDs on a DVD-ROM drive, the system
has to have a DVD Decoder.  The two most popular are WinDVD and
PowerDVD.  If you purchased a retail DVD-ROM, that software is
usually included with the drive.  What is the Brand and Model
of the new drive?

Sorry Jeff ....... you were fast.

Mr. Skybird i bought the cd drive thru Dell and I think its a Toshiba  and i did not get any software with it..They said no software comes with it after i called them enquiring about software.  They said just plug it in and play it.....

This is what the invoice says the drive is  ASSY,CDRW/DVD,48X,HH,TSST,05 .  In the device manager it shows the CD Rom Drive as a TSSTcorpCDRW/DVDTSH492B.  That is all I know of the cd-drive...

Thanks for all of the info, I will try looking for WinDVD or PowerDVD.

Thanks again,

Bill

Incase you are curious, here is your User's Guide ............

It seems to me that Dell should have included a DVD Decoder software
unless it was an OEM drive.  Anyway, DVD Decoder software (the OEM
version) is usually available for about $10 from Software Outlets.
For example ...........

or ........

Mr. Skybird you never cease to amaze me.  Thank you very much on locating the user guide on my CD-rom drive, I tried to get info on it but was unable to come up with anything.  Also thank you for finding and sending the information on the decoder programs.  I will be ordering one of them today.  I know one thing, before I ever call Dell up for anything, I will come here first.  You guys are GREAT.......

Cheers,

Bill
