CD Drives not Detected

Hi all.. I recently installed Vista on my computer {Dell Dimension E310-P4 1gig ram etc..) And although my internal and external CD / DVD Drives both worked for a day after, they are no longer being recognized by my system. I can see them in 'Devices' and yes they have an exclamation mark next to them. My external DVD/CD Drive is generic and came with no software.. and was automatically...(plug N play) .. recognized and worked great until I installed vista. The DVD / CD internal drive also worked great until Visata.... Can someone help me with a possible place to get drivers?

Look in the Device Manager .........

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.
Is there an Error Code (number) present?

Yes, there's an error code 39 there. What does that mean? Mike

It means you should try this Dell Article for removing the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters
in the Registry here .............

Disregard the reference to Roxio.

Thank you for the info. And that's exactly what I did and it fixed my problem. Can you elaborate on exactly 'what' is done by this reg.edit? Thanks!! Mike.

It may occasionally occur during the removal or installation of a program.
It most of the time occurs with burning programs.  It seems quite random
and not consistent as to how and when it occurs.  It first showed up with
the release of Windows XP and the Roxio burning program.  Thus the Dell and
Microsoft articles refer to Roxio.  Since then it has been observed to occur
with other program installs or removals and not limited to just burning programs.
