Pretty easy: A CD-R can be written to but never erased or written over. Think of it like a clay tablet. Rock solid.

A CD-RW can be erased and reused. Of course for that wonderful utility comes drawbacks. They are harder to write to as well as read. Most devices, CD Players DVD Players, game players etc. can't read them.

Reliability is the real issue. RW's are just not reliable. I keep track and find 50 to 100 uses is what mine get. Some fail by the 3rd use! They also fail over time. My original RWs are 6 years old and I find them failing left and right lately.

RW's are great for testing.

Media type aside, the only similarity between working with optical media and magnetic media is that both are round. That’s it, everything else is different!

To burn media you must use a special program. XP Burning is one such program and XP is the first OS to even have it.

Blowin your mind, check this.  Plextor and Sony are the best drives I think.

CD-R

CD-RW

DVD

DVD-R

DVD-R plus

DVD-R minus

DVD-RW

DVD-RW plus

DVD-RW minus

DVD-RW Dual Layer

DVD-RW Light-Scribe

I have found that DVD-R minus works great for copying DVD movies. And. DVD-R plus works great for DATA.
