Rhwrightijr,

We can start you off with some standard steps; Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 1, 14, 16; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2; Section 12, articles 2, 10, 3.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Rhwrightjr:

Since I have a 4100 (similar setup), I'll add to Jeff's suggestion. The system information toll is not going to tell you what type of drive you have. It will report any ATAPI drive as a regular CD-ROM. In device manager, you will see the specific type of drive you have.

What the system reports about a CD-RW disc depends on what you're using to read the disc. If you use your regular burning program, it should report the correct amount of used/free space. Windows may or may not, depending on whether you have enabled CD recording for the drive.

Thanks for your suggestions. It appears that my best bet would be to reinstall windows.

I'm not sure why you need to do that. Nothing you've mentioned so far indicates that you have a problem.

In an effort to isolate the problem to one or more of: 1)the disk; 2) software; or, 3)the drive, I did the following:

I eliminated 1) the disk as being the problem by checking it on another computer.

I made a clean install of WinXP on another partition, loaded Sonic, and checked the disk. The disk was read correctly as RW. This eliminated 3) the drive.

I am left with 2) software as the culprit, which is what Predator tried to tell me by providing a link to the CD information web site.

My problem now is that I am not sufficiently savvy to decipher the information suggested by Predator.

So, the way I see this, I already have one solution: to format the partition containing the culprit software and reinstall everything, with everything here being a lot of stuff. Or, I can wait and see if by accident I have provided a clue here for someone to give me the answer as to what tweak to perform.

Wanted to report that I reinstalled Windows and solved the problem. However, after an update to Sonic DLA v. 4.98 I am right back where I started.  Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Microsoft Article ID 883523 may cover this problem. I have not tried the hotfix. Is there someone out there who has tried it?

My recommendation would be to uninstall DLA and roll your system back. You are beginning to find out why most of the forum regulars do not recommend this program. If you want to add files incrementally to a CD, you can still use the Windows CD burning wizard, which supports multi-session.

I don't understand the program; but, if I can do without DLA, I think that this experience indicates that would be a good move. The Sonic RecordNow program CD installs DLA without the option to refuse it, so I thought that it was an integral part of their program. Actually, it had been working fine for a couple of years. I think the last update is what did me in. I think that update is what doesn't work with WinXP SP2 per the MS article, and that it put something into the Registry that is not removed by uninstalling the program.

Unfortunately, I can't do a roll back because I gave up on Restore way back and have it disabled. At the present time, my choices appear to be: live with it; call Microsoft for the hotfix; or reinstall Windows. The fact that MS does not offer the hotfix as a download must mean something.

I think that for now I will just live with it. I am not using the RW disks and I have a large external storage drive. The time will comes to do a reinstall to purge the hard disk, and I will take care that I don't fall into this hole again.

Thanks for your help.
