CD and DVD Drives Not Recognized by Windows XP
To start, I was originally having issues with programs loading slowly, internet connection not working properly, etc. (I also delete temp files and perform normal maintenance on a regular basis, so this was not my problem). Thus, I loaded a restore point, and this solved all of the aforementioned problems, but I gained a few new issues.
1. My Dell Dimension 9100 (with XP Home - sp2) does not recognize either of my external CD & DVD drives (HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B & SONY CD-RW CRX217E). I have tried to install/update drivers, and uninstall/re-install each device, to no avail. Thus, when I insert a disk, I can hear it trying to read it, although nothing happens. Also, my BIOS IS recognizing these drives, which I have the most recent driver (A03). Further, my device manager shows a "!" next to each of these, no icons whatsoever under "My Computer", and my "portable media device" icon in the control panel does not display properly.
2. My SCSI/RAID Host Controller also has a "!" next to it under the device manager. I would like to also resolve this issue, even though I only have 1 HD.
Any assistance is highly appreciated.

Hi HotChicken,
Lets try a couple of things: click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3 and reload the IDE controller.
Then consider Clearing the NVRAM, this may take care of both issues. Let us know if any of this helps...
also just to throw out as much as posible, Upper & Lower Filters, same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10 (Ignore the reference to Roxio)
Merry Christmas !

Predator-
Thank you for your very quick response. Before you replied, I read other posts with similar problems, and found a link to your webpage from there (which is very excellent by the way, and DO suggest it for anyone else having similar problems), as you seem to be very effective at solving these types of issues. Unfortunately, I did NOT try what you just suggested (so I cannot give feedback as to how well it worked) outside of deleting upper / lower limits, due to the fact that I just went back to factory defaults (starting fresh - Ctrl + f11 during startup), as XP was starting to get too buggy for me and wanted to avoid future headaches (I took into consideration all of the issues I had recently, even beyond the present problem). Anywho, I did not mean to waste your time, although I was up all night re-installing all my software and updates. Again, many thanks, and I hope that you and yours have a very Merry Christmas.
