CD drive doesn't work. Can someone help?
I have the Dell 4550 series desktop. Purchased it 4 years ago.
My first problem is with the cd drive door. I press the button and 9 out of 10 times, it doesn't open. I could press it several times and it still wont open. If and when it does decide to open, I insert a music CD, whether it is a burned cd or a cd I've purchased. When the door closes and the drive activates, my Music Match Juke Box comes on to my screen. Ok, good so far. When the track list appears on the Music Match Juke Box, it shows the list of songs on the CD. Here's the problem --- Music Match highlights the first song that is to be played, but instead of playing properly, it quickly runs down the list of songs all the way to the end of the list, sort of skipping on down without actually playing the song. At first, I thought it was a problem with the specific CD, but I've it tried with all of my CD's and it does this with all of them. I can play my CD's in my car, so I know it's not a problem with the CD's themselves. I 've tried to go to the control panel, clicked on "system" icon, clicked the hardware tab, clicked "device manager," clicked the + next to DVD/CD Rom Drives, clicked the type of CD Rom I have (which is Samsung), click "properties" and it says "this device is working properly. No it isn't. I've tried to update the driver by going to the wizard, but then a box pops up on the screen that says "Cannot Continue Update Wizard." I have no idea what the problem could be. There is never any type of error message when I try to play a CD...nothing. It just skips down the list and I don't know what the problem is with the door not opening. Sometimes, it opens, sometimes it doesn't. If anyone has had the same problem or knows what it could be, I'd appreciate some help. Thanks
J

Hi, jctwp:
Please locate the model of your CD drive in device manager and post that here. Chances are your drive is going to need to be replaced. The good news is that they're fairly inexpensive.

Thanks Osprey. In device Manager, it shows the model as being a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-240
B. The drive is provided by Microsoft and the version is 5.1.2535.0. I'm still learning about this type of information about computers, so if this information doesn't sound right, let me know.

Thanks again. I've printed the standard trouble shooting steps you provided, but I'm not sure what data disc you are talking about that I'd need for these steps. I've gone through all of the CD's that came with the computer when it was shipped to me and I don't see any disc that states that it is a data disc. I do have one disc for installing/reinstalling Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.2 Basic, and there is another disc labled "Drivers And Utilities." The contents listed on the Drivers and Utilities disc are Device Drivers, diagnostics and Utilities, and Computer Documentation. Could that be the one you're talking about? All other cd's have to do with uninstallation/reinstallations of programs.
Thanks
