CD drivers are corrupt error code 39

Hey guys,

Both of my cd drives are corrupt. I have a Sony CD-RW CRX217E that says that "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39). I also have a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM-GDR8163B that is saying the same message.

I have tried to uninstall using the device manager and downloaded new drivers with a patch called R104418 from dell. I have also tried to do a system restore with several dates. None of the dates would work. I tried Jan 1, Jan 5 and December 5, just random dates.

The machine is an XPS-600 with Windows XP-64 operating system. Let me know asap what else I can try.

 Thanks,

Hi Doctor Audit,

The Code 39 error is related to the Upper & Lower Filters, please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 10.

Best Regards!

Predator,

I appreciate the help. I was just wondering before I do this if you could give me a few more tips.

Does this work for the new 64 bit operating systems? The article just says XP and 2000 systems. Let me know. I do not recognize the name of the cd creator that you referenced. I did a search for Roxio Easy CD creator and nothing came up. I have noticed that "Sony" comes up on the screen when I try to create or burn a CD. Is this a Sony product?

It says to back up my registry files. I know this sounds like a stupid question but if the CD-Rom does not work, how do I back these files up? Do I use a floppy or will it work enough to do the back up? I don't think it will but I was just curious. How long will that take? How many floppy disks will it take?

I hope I do not sound like an idiot!!! I have never done anything like this before, but am willing to try. Brand new machine (4 months old) and I do not want to mess it up!!! Don't want to mess with the warranty either. Will this mess with it if I don't give Dell a call?

Thanks again, I am really desperate. Tax season is a coming around the corner!!!

Hi Doctor Audit,

Dell and Microsoft both have articles on this Code error, the article covers Code 19, 31, 32, 39 and 41. They both need updating to include just about any third party burning program. We have seen it with Roxio, Nero, Sonic, iTunes, MusicMatch, etc....
I dare we may have seen this going on 1000 + times now, backing up the registry is a standard "safety" tip but if you follow the directions, most simply skip it and it works very well.
It will not hurt your warranty and if you would rather, please do contact Dell and have them walk you through it. You are not the first my friend to be concerned about editing the registry and I know Dell has gotten calls on this.

Best Regards!

Predator,

Thank you for the advice. I tried it and they are reading CD-roms and playing audio cd's but I cannot burn any music or copy a cd to another. It sounds like it is reading but not writing, I guess.

The device manager says that both are working properly, I don't get it. Windows media player version 10 does not recognize the drives when I want to burn CD's. Sonic Digital Media LE version 7 does not recognize the drives either. Do you have any ideas on this problem?

You have been great. I appreciate it very much. I have over an hour commute to work and back one way, so I don't want to spend my "downtime" on the phone with Dell support!!!

Talk to you tommorrow.

You do know that you are answering a 4.5 year old post, surely by now the OP has either resolved the issue, or has purchased a new computer.  :emotion-42:
