CD rom driver (no drives found) device:mscd001, installation errors.
Hi everyone and anyone!
Hi,
I desperately need your help.
I bought a laptop through ebay from this company called Andover consulting 1 month ago. I paid a good price of $357.00 It is a Dell Latitude CSx H; no OS, resource disks, manuals, etc. I did a lot of research through dell on the system I have. I finally received the floppy drive with the bay cable and I bought a dell cd rom drive through ebay. I have it hooked to a media cable. So all is well and operative there. Originally the system showed that there was no drive available. I had to perform a format c. When completed it read: 5,715.07 mb total disk space, 0.88 in bad sectors, 5714.19 mb available on disk, 4,096 bytes in each allocation unit, 1,462,832 allocation units available on disk, volume serial number is 1boe-1806.
I've two types of my own OS I can use; either Windows xp or windows me. Too unsure as if a windows 98 upgrade OEM can be used. (please let me know???) What I did try is the windows 98 upgrade first. I found a site called bootdisk.com. What I did was download the windows 98 with oem. I had downloaded and installed a windows 98, ME bootdisk to have options. The windows XP required 6 diskettes.
After placing the windows 98 bootdisk in the Dell floppy I placed the windows 98 upgrade cd in the cd/rom to begin a clean install. It read through and installed a temporary ram. I got an error message stating there were no drives found. Device driver not found 'mscd001.' No valid cd/rom device drivers selected. Then it will continued to read loading up dos to prompt a:\> It tells me to c+alt+del. When I remove the diskette and soft boot, the cd/rom works.
But when it restarts to cd/rom, I see a flash of Windows 98. Then it goes to dos C:\> prompt. I thought then why not try Windows ME? So I downloaded a boot disk with Windows ME and used my Windows ME CD to get through the steps. when it restarts, there's a flash of Windows ME and then it goes to Dos, C:\> prompt. Mind you, I did go back to Bios prior to the restart to change the order of boot, showing CD/Rom first. What do I do now? How can I get this to boot to Windows so I can continue the installation?
Anybody please help!

If you have a full version of Windows XP you can just boot to the CD-ROM, format the harddrive, and then install the Operating System.
If you still have questions on this you may want to post in the Latitude General forum.
Thank you for choosing Dell.

Thank you for the suggestion but I've tried this several times; with the cd rom only and cd rom booting up first. It doesn't work. An error message occurs. no driver, mscd001. It goes to c: prompt.
I've had to use an XP boot disk instead; using all 6 diskettes. C: Partition1 (fat32) 5726 mb (5712 mb free)
I follow the instructions to format the partition (fat32) only to receive this mesage: Setup cannot format the partition. Your computer may not have enough memory to perform this operation, or your windows xp cd-rom may contain some corrupted files.
Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press f3. I have no choice but to quit.
What now?

How much memory do you have? You will need a minimum of 128mb's for Windows XP and it is recommended that you have 256mb's.

I have the same problem with my LT. After formatting the HD and using a floppy start up disc for 98, the external Dell cdrom that is connected to the pcmcia slot is not recognized or powered by the slot. So, I can't get any further to load 98oem. I plugged this drive into another 98 notebook and it recognized it, but labeled it an unsupported device and it would not work. I then plugged this drive into an XP notebook and it worked fine, although it recognized it as an Hitachi HD. The cdrom does have an external ac source that I have been using while trying to get it to work on the LT. If I can get the cdrom to be recognized, I'm sure everything else will work. Any suggestions?
