CDs suddenly become unreadable

Although I'm very careful about avoiding scratches and contamination of my CD-RW and CD-R surfaces, about 15% of my CD media become suddenly unreadable by either the DVD drive or CDRW drive. I use brand-name media like TDK and Memorex, and Roxio Easy CD Creator 6.
1. How can I avoid this disaster?
2. Is there a program that will allow me to repair a corrupt disk or retrieve some of the files?

You can try IsoBuster and see if it will help recover some of the files.

I would like to know more about how you are writing these discs?

Are you using the packet writer, Drag to Disc or Classic?

I usually format a CD by selecting it in My Computer and then right-clicking>format  OR

format using Roxio Drag-to-Disc function

I write to the formatted CDR or CDRW using Roxio Drag-to-Disc.

Thank you! Now we know what we are dealing with and that changes the answers.

One recovery program is CD Roller, Here.

D2D has a Scan Disc utility that may be able to recover most or all of your files.

Now on to next time.

No packet writer has ever been accused of being reliable. Never trust one with the only copy of anything you value!

On the other hand, you never see anyone asking about recovering files from a Finalized Data CD… Second choice would be Data CD using Sessions.

With sessions you can write more, overwrite existing files but not delete.
