Two possible solutions come to mind:

1.  You can get an adapter that fits the 44 pin laptop drive to a standard IDE cable in a desktop.  Then, set the jumper on the notebook drive to "slave" and install it on the same cable with the desktop drive.  The desktop should recognize the drive on boot-up, giving you access to the contents.

2.  (What I would do)  Get a USB external drive enclosure for a 2.5 notebook drive (can be found for about $35). Install the drive in it (takes all of about 3 minutes) and plug into the USB port on any computer.  If you are using WinXP, the drive will be detected and installed automatically.  You can then use this drive for external, portable storage afterwards, too.
