Can SATA and eide live side by side?
I'd like to add a second hard drive to my Deminsion 5150, which has a SATA drive now. Can I use an eide as my second drive?

How to install an IDE hard drive as the secondary with a SATA primary hard drive.
If there is one optical drive installed, you could install the IDE/ATA hard drive in the 5.25" internal open bay and connect it to the end IDE cable connector.
Set the hard drive jumpers to 'Cable Select'
You will require a 3.5"- HD Bracket to install the drive in the internal 5.25" bay, similar to this.
Two optical drives installed:
Use a powered external IDE USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, this is the method I used for my D-8400 and Inspiron 530 to install a IDE HD for additional storage. [The easiest way of adding an IDE hard drive].
Use a PCI IDE controller card and install the drive inside the case and connect it to the controller.
After the hard drive is installed, enter the BIOS setup and check that the drive is set to auto [on] and in order for windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be patitioned and formatted. These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands.
The easiest procedure, would be to install a second internal hard drive, would be to use a SATA drive.
Bev.
