Cannot Open Imaging CD's

Help!  I cannot open my imaging CD's for some reason.  I have tried 3 or 4 different ones.  I used to be able to open them:(  I have a 4550 and my CD-R is _NEC CD-RW NR-9300A.  I recently replaced my printer and have a HP psc 2175v all in one.  I just got my stepdaughters wedding pictures on disk and she wants me to print them for her and I can't open them.  I have tried thru My Computer, and thru Windows Explorer.  I have tried thru Dell Imaging Expert and it tells me there is a "Dummy" in the CD!  In My Computer and Explorer it doesn't do anything!  I can open any other type of disk.

Hi Ladycarpenter,

Lets start bye re-installing the drivers in case of corruption; Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3.
Also if you have windows XP, consider the Restore Feature, roll the system back to a date before the problem started, for information on this, same CD/RW link, Section 100, article 17.

If still no help, I would suggest you scan your system for a virus and / or spyware. Jump over to the Special Interest-Virus Conference and click on the FAQ locked in at the Top of the page from Dell-ChrisM.

Best Regards

Hi LC,

Do you have any idea what format the pictures are in? I am wondering if the disc was closed properly and what software was used to create the discs?
In Windows Explorer, can you "see" the files? Have you tried holding the Shift Key down when loading the disc, then right click on the file and select Open with.. pick a program but do not yet put a "check" in the box to Always Use that program...

Best Regards

:smileysad:Well, so far none of that does the trick.  I even did a diagnostics and it read the CD fine, but it is data that it reads.  I can't even get Search to list the contents.  I have tried 2 or 3 different picture cd's and none of them will open.  Any other ideas????

No, I cannot "see" the files in Explorer.  The "disk" is next to my mouse, but explorer won't "see" the disk!  But, if it is a data or audio disk it will.

They are mainly walmart digital imaging ones.  I know that I have opened all but one of them (The Wedding one!!) before.  I am wondering if I have done something, or if the HP Printer that has the media slots has "robbed" something.  I can put my camera disk in and the printer reads it fine and sends it wherever I tell it to.  Let me try the last thing you mentioned.

I have been reading your thread and would like to suggest a couple of other steps…

With the offending disc in your drive, what if you use Explorer and right click on the drive, selecting Properties? – If it works, what does it say about the File System?

Likewise, you should have burning software on your PC. Most packages have some utility to examine media, Disc Info or something to that effect. What does it report?

You can also download a free trial of CD Roller and see if it can work with that media. Here

Lastly, do you have anyone else that can try loading that disc?

When I do this, it basically just stalls.  Doesn't do anything, when I try to close Explorer then it tells me it is now responding.  If I eject the the photo disk, everything returns to normal.  It does this on any photo disk, not just one.

When I do this, again, the program basically stalls. Doesn't recognize that a disk is in.  I even put a new picture on a brand new formatted CD.  I can't open it either. (and I closed it so that any CD Rom could read it.

I am going to do this next.

Yes, everybody else can open them.

Yes, first thing in the morning I am going to my computer shop!  It needs a good cleaning anyway.

Thanks all of you, and if you come up with anything else that might help let me know!!!

Based on your answers, it seems to all come back to your drive. I would replace the drive, they are cheap enough.

CDRoller seems like a good program, but it doesn't recognize or can't access the imaging disks either.

I can open a photo that is on a diskette though or ones that are on my camera disks.  This is frustrating:smileymad:

Well, I ended up replacing the drive.  The optics were bad.  Works like a charm now!  By the time I got my computer to the shop it wouldn't even read data either!  Thanks for all of your advice though!!!  I sure know where to come when (notice I said when and not if) I have another problem:))

When it works, life is good!

FYI for anyone having problems.  It cost me about 60 dollars for the new drive 52x, I can burn as well as read, they installed it and cleaned my 'puter for me for another $20 and took less than half an hour.
