My optiplex on winxp stopped recognizing DVD media. It can read CDs. I tried with all DVDs I have. Also reinstalled powerDVD software. still no improvement. What else can I do?

Cheers,
when certain dvd-rom are inserted into the dvd+rw/+r the cpu utilization increases to 100% and the o/s becomes unresponsive.
Action: the o/s is windows xp sp1. The dvd+rw/+r uses sonic record now! Deluxe.
I inserted CD’s into both drives and the system functions normally. I inserted some DVD’s into the dvd drive and cyberlink powerdvd starts, and says the disk is not usable, but the disk can be accessed through windows explorer and the system functions normally. Updated sonic record now deluxe, restarted – disk can be read, but cpu utilization increases to 100%, O/S responds. Ran dell diagnostics on optical drives using cd’s. result – okay. Ran dell diagnostics on dvd+rw/+r. result – Read test error code 00F00:021D. Msg block 3369540: Illegal request – possible use of incorrect media. Inserted dvd video, which ran properly. I stopped the applications tfswctrl.exe (HP), sgtray.exe (Sonic), and DVDlauncher.exe (Cyberlink) from auto-starting, inserted DVD, and system performed normally. Re-enabled DVDlauncher.exe to autostart, rebooted, system performed normally. Re-enabled tfswctrl.exe to autostart, rebooted, inserted dvd, cpu utilization increases to 100%.
According to documentation on the file, “tfswctrl.exe is an essential process for HP's packet writing software which burns data to CD's using Microsoft Windows explorer. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
