Cant Format Drive

I am trying to format my friend's hard drive n reinstall windows.

Problem is, after I delete the partitions and recreate new ones, I cant seem to properly format them.

It always goes partway and then an error comes up, and I cant do anything else.

Any ideas? Plz suggest some good links or provide the proper steps in performing this reformatting.

btw the computer is an IBM Aptiva

thx!

I tried to install win ME since its a slower machine.

I tried to use fdisk to delete partitions n make new ones, but i get an error when i try to format.

I also tried starting up with the winXP disk to use its utility but i get an error message "cannot be run from DOS"...

So wat shuld i do?

this is what i would do-

go into the bios and set the bios to opimal settings

boot with the system boot floppy , and do this-

1. delete all partitions , make sure there are not any non-dos partitions also, delete them too. partition the hard drive and  make it active.

2. you will have to reboot , then at the a prompt- type this- foramtt c: -     should start formatting

I think that Debug.exe can help you to solve this problem. Even there is some logical error on your hard disk. You can boot with DOS bootable disk. And then, run debug.exe.

A:\> debug“Enter"
-F200L1000“Enter
-ACS:100“Enter
xxxx:0100MOVAX,301“Enter
(Remark:xxxx:0100 prompted by system,so needn't to input)
xxxx:0103MOVBX,200“Enter
xxxx:0106MOVCX,1“Enter
xxxx:0109MOVDX,80“Enter
xxxx:010CINT13“Enter
xxxx:010EINT20“Enter
xxxx:0110 “Enter
-G“Enter

After these commond, the screen will display “Program terminated normallyâ€.  After reboot system, you can create new partitions.

Good Luck!

Hi,

Download and run the delpart utility to remove all partitioning information

http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm

The link is on the middle of the page.

Run this from a floppy disk such as a Win 98 SE bootable floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com. Run the downloaded file to create the bootable floppy.
