Code 19 error/ Inspiron 1100
My DVD Player worked fine at first. Now it doesn't operate at all and I receive a Code 19 Error Message. I have tried the troubleshooter a few times and it just throws in the towel and also did System Restore as far back as was able and no success. I ran CHKDSK and it spun out something about BIOS Updating, Caching, Shadowing and also using Safe Mode to remove or disable components and I confess, that's just outta my league without a Guru or a little Leprechaun to watch over me.

This is my notebook but was used by a family member for a few months here at home for a business and found out recently that the DVD has not been working. Go figure, but you know the story. So now it's mine again and I am here at your door with me hat in me hand looking a wee-bit Irish.
Happy Saint Patty's Day

Oh my God! That's unbelievable! I guess I am having the same problem as you do... my DVD drive hasn't been working either for almost a week now. I am not a computer person, but I did what I could, and what I was told to do. First I tried to uninstall the DVD drive, and reinstall it...it didn't help, still had the exclamation mark at the CD/DVD player, and still had the same message given: "Windows cannot start this hardware device, because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
So...then I also tried to restore my computer to a previous date, but it was unable to do that...that's how far I could get to up to this point with this whole issue...I have no idea what else to try, I am hoping to get help here from someone who actually knows about computers more than i do, which is not too much...;) Anyway...please help! anyone who has any idea, please tell me! I am so upset, this is so frustrating!:smileysad:

OK...I clicked on the link you have sent me, and I tried the 2nd method, replacing the existing driver.I followed the instructions, uninstalled the drive, reinstalled it, but after that, it still has the exclamation mark on it. And it says there's supposed to be a '?', but I have an "!" on it. But I tried this before too, it didn't work then either. :( And I don't have the guts to try the first method, cause it says that: "If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk." So I rather don't try it, cause I am quite sure I would do something really bad...this is bad in itself, but I don't want to make it worse...any other tips? Thanks so much for your help!

Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters in the right pane.
NB only one key may be present but still delete it.
Now reboot and your optical drive(s) should function again.
NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

Carbon copy here! Thanks guys. I think I'da blown a gasket on my own. DVD's playing like new! I even dared the treacherous regedit (under your cover of course). Love my Dell but appreciate the daylights outta the support you guys give here on the discussion board. I am so stoked! Now I have to bust open an ice cold brewski to celebrate.
Thanks again for helping
