Computer freezes when attempting to burn DVD using Nero software

I recently purchased a Sony DVD burner for my dimension desktop computer. It came with Nero software which I downloaded to the computer. I can play DVDs but when I try to burn a DVD the computer freezes. I do not get any error messages. I have to turn the power to the computer off to restart. I am not very technical when it comes to computer issues like this therefore I would appreciate any help anybody can give me.

Nero has two utilities that can help. There is a drive test and a simulated burn test. Use the help to learn how to run these and have Nero report what it finds. You don't have to actually burn a disc.

When you post back, I would like you to tell me two things. Have you tried burning CDs yet? And what is the model of your computer?

Unfortunately I am at work right now and do not know the exact model number on my computer. I do know that it is a dimension L series. I have not tried to burn CDs on the Sony drive yet because I already had a CD burner that came with the computer that I use for creating CDs.

The model number is L1000R

This may indicate a problem with your drive installation. Check the following:

  • Was the drive jumper set to the cable select position?
  • Is this IDE channel turned on in the BIOS?
  • Is the drive running in DMA?

Could you please explain how I can check the things you have mentioned and how I can change them if they are not correct? I am sorry but I do not know a lot of technical stuff about computers! I really appreciate your help!

Here's an illustrated guide on installing a CD drive that shows how to set the jumper. Make sure it's set to cable select. Boot to the BIOS (F2 at the blue Dell logo) and make sure this drive is turned on. See your manual for this. To check DMA, see this article.

Fortunately, you don't need to know a lot of technical stuff about computers to fix most things. You just need to know how to find the proper resources.
