Computer lags when cd burning.

Hi,

I have a Dell Deminision 4700c w/ a Sony CDRW/DVD drive in it.  Anyway, when I burn CD's though Windows Burner or Nero the system lags.  Sounds are like choppy and mouse becomes skippy/etc.  I Also noticed that the Buffer underruns a few times then recovers.

I dont have any type of programs runnign that would make it lag out, I'm guessing its some sort of hardware problem or setting problem.  Can anyone shine some light on the problem?  Thanks

Carsten

Hi Carsten,

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 14, this is to verify that you have DMA enabled.

Next check what programs / processes you might have running in the back ground.
Also we have seen issues with Spyware / Viruses cause slow down of the overall system.

Best Regards

Hi,

Went in and checked, there both on DMA if aviable option, and in the device type its set to Auto Detect.  Also I dont have any type of resource hogging application open so I highly doubt thats the problem.

Any other ideas?

Also, it says Current transfer mode is "PIO Mode"

Is there anyway to "FORCE" it?

Carsten,

Is the Sony a Dell factory install or one you installed yourself?
If Dell then the jumper should be correct, if not, then check what jumper setting on the back of the drive you used, Dell ships using the Cable Select Feature.

A couple of things; when you entered the BIOS did you verify that the IDE channel was set to Auto and that both Drives are On, Dell defaults the second drive to off.

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2; Section 15, articles 13 & 17.

Best Regards

Just tested the burning...worked fine for a while and now its laggy again.  I canceled the burning bc it was a test burn but i checked the DMA setting again and it was still in DMA mode 5 (guessing it takes a while to step down).  I check the wire and it isnt the normal IDE cable, its paper thin (not sure exact name of this wire) but you think its worth swapping it out?

Thanks,

Carsten

Hi,

I just reset the transfer mode by the registry thing and now its under DMA.  I've been reading cds and so far so good (havent tested burning).

But its the standard Sony CDRW/DVD combo that Dell included with the system.  I havent messed with it at all.

Hi Carsten,

Although rare, one can never rule out a bad IDE cable. Purchase a 40-pin 80-conductor type, these may state ATA/66, 100 or 133 standard on them.

Something else, have you ran any recent virus and spyware scans, these can slow a system down. Review the FAQ Dell-ChrisM has "pinned / locked" at the Top of the Special Interest-Virus Conference.

Best Regards

Hi,

First of all thanks for the help Predator.  I have plenty of extra IDE cable flying around the house someplace and I will try it out as soon as i get a chance.
