Computer won't read USBs, says it doesn't have a driver.

My Inspiron 15 laptop will not read any USBs, although my wireless mouse and keyboard still work. It just has problems reading normal USBs with files on them.

I've been into device manager and uninstalled the USB drivers and everything but it still doesn't work. After troubleshooting it says "USB doesn't have a driver". It does this for all of my USBs, not just one.

When I tried to get Windows to automatically install a driver for me, it said I would have to search for my own.

Please help

Hi,

You can download the drivers that you need from the Dell support pages.  If you go to the main Dell support site, input your service tag, your browser will redirect you to the support pages for your specific model of the Inspiron 15.

Once on the support pages for your specific model, click on the Drivers & Downloads icon.  You don't mention in your post which version of Windows that you're running on your laptop but make sure you filter the downloads to the correct Operating System that you have.  Look for the Chipset driver for your system.

If you can tell me which version of Windows you're running, and the specific model number of your Inspiron 15 (when you input the service tag and the pages refresh you'll find the four-digit model number), then I can try and give you a bit more information on the specific driver that you need.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

It's an Inspiron 15 3543, and I'm currently using Windows 8.

When I did Driver Detect on the website it says there were no driver updates found.

When I filter under Chipset there are 3 different drivers to choose from, so I'm not sure which one/s I should be installing.

Hi,

In Windows 8 there isn't a direct USB driver needed, Windows 8 handles USB control itself.   What we can do is go into Device Manager and look for items listed that have an exclamation point or red X under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers.  Any items in that category that have an exclamation point or red X, right click on it and select "Uninstall".

Then reboot your system.  Windows should reinstall the correct USB controllers and allow your system to use USB devices normally.

Let me know how that goes and what items you're seeing that have one of those "bangs" (exclamation or X) next to it.

I went to Device Manager and there are no items under Universal Serial Bus Controllers with exclamations or a red X, but under 'Other Devices' there are. Any USB I plug in (aside from my wireless mouse and keyboard) appear under 'Other Devices' with a yellow exclamation mark next to them.

For example, I just tried to plug in two of my USBs and it says 'TOSHIBA USB DRV' with an exclamation mark, and 'UDisk' with an exclamation mark.

I tried uninstalling them and then restarting my computer. As soon as I plugged them in the same thing happens again. I cannot access the content on them and they have an exclamation mark again.
