Connecting two computer with a cable connected to the Parallel ports

Question

I have a Dimension 8400 and I want to connect to an old Gateway computer with a 40 Gig hard drive running windows 98 via the parallel ports.  I have attempted to make the connection by logging on as the Adminisrator and opened Network Connections and set it up as an incoming Connection, however windows stops responding and I can't proceed.    Can anyone tell me what may be the problems with Windows not responding?

The parallel cable must be a LapLink cable or have a null modem adapter. You can't connect two computers with a straight-thru serial or parallel cable.

It would be much easier, and faster, to remove the Gateway's hard drive and hook it to the middle connector of the cd/dvd cable (remove the drive there if it's plugged in), set jumpers to cable select, and boot it up.
