Create system image

My hard disk drive on my Dell XPS 8300 is failing, so before I replace it I want to create a system image.  But the software says I can't create one.   It does not recognize my external WD My Book Essentials drive or a CD.

Help!

Hi Little Old Prof,

The software you're using is what?

I've tried Microsoft Backup and Dell Data Safe Local Backup.  With Microsoft Backup I receive error messages such as 0x8100037.  And when I research this error code http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973455/en-us#workaroundissue12,  I can't seem to fix the problem.

With Dell Data Safe, the software does not recognize the USB key even though I have tried the flash drive in multiple usb ports.

Dell DataSafe Local Backup has been replaced by Dell Backup and Recovery. The free version only creates an image of the factory hard drive installation. You must pay for the premium version to create a custom system image.

The fix for the error in Windows Backup is described here.

Thanks.  I finally figured out what I should do.  I unclicked all the file folders in Microsoft backup and clicked only the "Create system image".   Then it told me I didn't have enough space on the 32 GB flash drive I used so I bought a larger external hard drive.  After two tries, it worked.  I now have a system image.
