DISC INCOMPATABILITY?

It doesn't matter what disc I insert into my NEC ND3450A, a maxell CD-RW, a Memorex DVD+RW a Hyundai DVD+R the device will not recognize any of them. When I attempt to burn using Sonic Record Now it always requests I insert "a blank or rewritable CD into the drive." If I go to "My Computer" and select the drive in question and then attempt to "explore" or "open", once again is "please insert a disk" no matter what type of disc I have in the drive. My DVD Rom also does the same. What am I doing wrong or what haven't I done?

Hi Mwdcanuck,

I know Dell has a firmware update for your 3450a but since this is happning with both drives; lets try something.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3 and reload the IDE controller

Best Regards!

Hi Mwd,

You have the dreaded Sonic software, actully Sonic`s Recordnow is not bad, it is the Packet Writing Program DLA that is not liked.
Consider disabling it for now, same CD/RW link, Section 13-0, article 12.

Best Regards!

Thanks Predator:  I was delighted to get a reply to quickly after spending the last 4 hrs. looking for a solution.  I uninstalled the ide-primary and rebooted. It showed it recognizing both my DVD drives etc.  The down side is that both drives will still not recognize any of my discs. and continue to give the same message.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks again Predator:   DLA was already unselected and I tried it both ways with no luck. It seems that it is just the burner that is not recognizing any media although everything else suggests that it is operating properly. I have the current firmware 103C but for some reason it still does not recognize any media. I have run out of experimental trial and errors.

Hi MWD,

If you are game and do not mind just a tad more tinkering.
Uninstall both drives from Device Manager, then shutdown. Disconnect the IDE cable from both drives, then attach the "end" connection to the NEC. Turn the system back on and disconnect it from the internet, turn off any Anti-virus, Spyware and Firewall, does the drive work now?
If so, start turning the software on and see if one of these have caused the problem.
If the drive does not work and you are still under warranty, contact Dell, reference this thread to the Tech and see if he/she will recommend a replacement.

Best Regards!

Hello Predator:  I appreciate your last suggestion even if it is beyond my skill level.  I will see if I can find a friend who might be able to do for me what you have suggested and will cross my fingers.  Thanks again

Hello Predator: Before I go about attempting that last suggestion of yours I just wish to mention that if I put in a music CD into the burner it automatically activates my winamp program and plays the CD. Does that info. change your previous suggestion? Thanks, mwd

Hello Predator: Out of frustration I pulled the cables off the drive and removed it from the PC long enough to blow compressed air through the thing and hope that perhaps one of the wires was loose or whatever. Anyways it is now working okay and I never will know what the exact cause was. Thanks very much for all your help.
