DVD/CD-ROM Devices Now Do Not Work

Both DVD/CD-ROM devices now do not work - as in nothing can be read (they worked in the past): NEC DV-5800A and Sony CD-RW CRX140E.  The error message for both: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)."  The Dell technician tried uninstalling the devices and rebooting my Dimension 8100 with Windows XP.  But that did not solve the problem.  They still do not work, and I get the same message.  Everything else on my computer seems to work fine.  Rich

Hi Rich,

The Code 39 error is related to the Upper & Lower Filters. I have two articles on this, one from Dell, the other from Microsoft. Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 10; Section 100, article 31. Ignore the reference to Roxio. Both articles are the same, some say they find Dell`s easier to follow.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Jeff is God! :smileyhappy:  The suggested solution worked!  I had previously uninstalled Roxio because I had been getting so many dire warnings about destabilizing my system and also the fact that Roxio refused to update their software.  Jeff's response to my posting was swift, on point, and successful.  Jeff, I love you, man!
