DVD/CD-ROM Drive not recognizing disks.

Hopefully someone can help. I am currently working to resolve an issue with malware on my Inspiron E1705. Another problem I am facing, not sure if this has to do with the virus, is that my DVD/CD-ROM drive is not recoginizing ANY disk that I put in the drive.  It is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B.  The drive was working perfectly up to this point last week. Suddenly it quit reading the disk that it was playing (CD).  The light is blinking on the drive, i can hear it spinning the disk and I can see the drive listed in Windows Explorer.

hi there,

try running REGEDIT and deleting upper and lower filters.

to do this :

go to start > Run > and then type REGEDIT...

on the Registry editor window. follow the path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

  1. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

  2. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

  3. Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.

  4. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

  5. Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.

  6. Quit Registry Editor. To do this, click Exit on the File menu.

  7. Restart the computer.

Hey FastBoot,

Thanks for your assistance.  I followed the directions to delete the upper and lower filters from the registry.  Unfortunately, that did not help.  I am still getting the same results.  If you have any more suggestions, I most definitely appreciate your help.

Yes, unfortunately, it looks like the drive has failed.

Please bare in mind I only have a working knowledge of computers-what I know I've thought myself-so please no jargon. I've also been having this problem, tried uninstalling the driver completely-but it still wouldn't install correctly afterwards. Was told that the problem might be with Roxio, which was preinstalled but only opened for first time a few days ago, so I uninstalled this. Still no joy.
I've just followed the above instructions but after "class" and the mad long code that I'm not bothered typing, there is no upper filters? This is what I'm getting...

(Default)
Class
ClassDesc
EnumPropPages32
IconPath
Installer32
LowerFilters
NoInstallClass
SilentInstall

Should I just uninstall the lowerfilters? I'm about to run those diagnostics listed above. Hopefully this will help. Any help would really be apreciated-I don't really fancy having to phone dell to fix the problem because it'll just prove how useless I am! This seems to be a pretty big problem with vista-have found hundreds of posts on google.

I'm using an Inspiron 1520 on windows vista home premium. The driver installed is
TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632D ATA Device , I checked the driver updates on dells website but neither have the same name as above-def wont work?
Please help...:smileysad:

just ran the diagnostics and everything passed. Any more ideas? Is it ever possible to get in touch with the tech support chat? Have tried on numerous occasions but its always busy. The link to email them leads to no-where! Whats the point of having something under warranty?

Look in the Device Manager .............

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select
Properties.  Is there an Error Code (number)?
