DVD ROM/CD-RW not recognized

I have a Dimension 3000 and its a little over a year old. The cd drive is acting like its not even hooked up. It wont open nor close and in the BIOS its listed as "UNKNOWN DEVICE". It does not appear in device manager either. I tried reconnectring all cables and clearing the NVRAM but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi 2oooRT,

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 10. See if either of these will help.

2oooRT,

Open the case and disconnect the IDE cable from both drive, also the power cable as well.
Re-boot the system and let Windows Load normally, shutdown once more.
If you have not changed anything, the jumpers on the back of the drives will be on Cable Select (CS or CSEL). Re-attach the IDE cable using the "End" connection to the drive sitting in the second/middle bay; attach the power cable; leave the drive in the Top bay off for now. Turn the system on, does the system recognize this drive, does it work? Post back....

Best Regards

Hi 2oooRT,
Now run those same steps I listed for the drive sitting in the top bay; testing it as the only device on the IDE cable.
Does this drive work? If the answer is yes, then the drive in the second bay is most likely bad. If it does not work, it is possible both drives could be bad, but I would consider replacing the IDE cable next, a new 40-pin 80-conductor type.
Any chance in a blue moon you can test the drives in another system?

Best Regards

2oooRT:

You said "secondary drive", which means the second drive on the channel. If you only have one drive, then it's the primary drive. Based on what you've described, it sounds dead to me.

Well I thought the main drive is the hard drive and the secondary is the CD drive

In any event, your drive sounds as though it has failed.
