DVD-ROM installation and regognition issues

I recently purchased a Dimension 4700 with XP and one CD-RW drive.  My plan was to then install the DVD-ROM drive from my old computer to then have two drives.  After some configuration I managed to get the BIOS software on bootup to recognize both drives by having the RW as master and the DVD drive as slave.  The problem now is that the DVD drive will not read or play properly.  When an audio or data CD is inserted and the drive is browsed in windows, only one file appears, named something like "track01" (sorry I'm at work and I can't remember the details).  MusicMatch is installed and the icon displays the symbol for a MM supported file and MM opens when the disc is inserted.  Again this is true no matter what CD is in the drive and I haven't been able to read from the CD.

I purchased the 4700 with only one drive and installed the next one later.  Do I still need to configure the computer somehow to accept two drives?  Would it help to change the drive jumpers to Cable Select?  Is this a software issue?  Thanks.

Hi Zzyzx,

Although Master / Slave should work fine, trying Cable Select cannot hurt and even may fix it, stranger things can happen.
In the BIOS, verify that the IDE channel is turned "ON" and that both Drive 0 & Drive 1 for the IDE channel are on as well.
As for Audio CD`s, sounds as though they are not Auto running/playing, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, start with article 57. In order to play DVD`s, remember you must install a DVD decoder / player, example PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc...

Best Regards

I configured both drives for cable select but that din't help or hurt anyhting.  BIOS still recognizes both drives.  I tried the link you suggested and auto play is configured correctly.  I browsed some of your other links but I couldn't find anything to help.

A disc of any format placed in the DVD-ROM displays as only one file of 44 bytes in windows explorer.  It is named track00.cda.  Not only will the disc not autoplay but clicking on the file does nothing.

Finally, I tried to boot from the XP setup disc placed in the drive.  Even that failed, leading me to think the drive is defective somehow.

Hi ZZ,

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 3. This is from Dell-Stephen, try his test.

You may also consider trying the test posted by Maize here:

Thank you for your help.  My computer doesn't have a floppy drive so I can't check the drive with a bootable.  I did run Dell's diagnostic program and all the performed tests (seek, read, and self) passed without detected problems.

I tried removing the problematic DVD drive and I put in an old CD-RW I had from the old computer and wouldn't you know I am playing an MP3 CD with it as I type.  Either my computer still can't recognize the DVD drive (for software reasons or not) or the drive is busted.
