DVD drive keeps disabling in Device manager
Hello, My first time posting in theis forum so please excuse me if I make errors with the guidelines. I have a DELL XPS 420 PC with win 7 64 bit. I did a firmware update (obtained from DELL website) two days ago to my TS-H353B SATA drive, as this drive was not recognizing any of my media (other drive is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653F SATA drive). The install prompted me to restart my PC to complete the installation which I did. Once restarted, the drive (F) disappeared from "My Computer" but showed up in Device Manager as disabled (right click). I enabled, the drive briefly (a few seconds) showed up in "My Computer" and then disappeared. When I checked the Device Manager, it was disabled again.
I tried uninstalling and restarting but have the same problem. I thought the firmware update damaged the drive, so I tried another SATA (lite on) dvd drive on my computer but still have the same problem. The other drive TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653F continues to work fine.
If I start in safe mode and enable the drive in Device manager, it stays enabled until I restart. If I put a DVD disc in the drive and keep enabling in Device Manager, the movie will eventually play. When I restart my PC, the problem starts again.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Hi Chptrini,
That's a new one! Can you just check the BIOS for me and make sure the drive is visible there?

I have attached a brief video of what happens in the Device Manger. Hope this helps

Yes, both dvd drives show up in the Bios. The one which keeps disabling has a arrow (black) next to it in Device manager

Do you see any error code in device manager?

No error codes. Just the black arrow next to the problem device.

Try the MS CD/DVD fix (link below).

Is it possible it may be software (although I have not installed any new software) except windows updates.

yes it did, but the problem still exists. It simply enabled the drive as I did in device Manager and then the drive disabled itself again

Osprey4,
thanks for the assistance. I tried the filter trick and it did not work. The odd thing is that the drives show up and work properly in Safe mode but not in normal mode. Is it possible

Ok, working in safe mode is a clue.
When you ran the filters trick, did the wizard indicate the problem was solved?

sorry. that reply was related to the Mr.Fix it.
When I removed the filters and rebooted the PC, the problem was still there.

Osprey4,
I finally found out my problem. It is a software called "secure it easy" form CoSoSys. I had installed the software on my PC at work as there were too many issues with employees and flash drives/viruses. A password is required for unknown usb devices.(screenshot attached)
The software however, requires the user to also grant access to internal CD/DVD drives when installed. When I checked, the dvd drive was not granted access. I stumbled on this when I attached an external USB hard drive and I was "prompted" to give this USB drive access.
Thanks for all your patience and support
