DVD player can not recognize dvd

I am having a problem with my playing dvd's.  I have a Dimension 8200 running Windows XP with service pack 2 installed.  I have a Samsung DVD-rom SD-616T and have PowerDVD version 4.0.11.  The problem seems to be that the DVD drive cannot recognize a DVD consistently.  On some of my  dvd's I am able to play them at various times, then I cannot play that very same dvd.  When I insert dvd nothing happens.  I have creative disc detector ver. 1.59 running.  It has not no problem recognizing and playing an audio cd so I think laser is working fine.  When I go to Start/ My Computer/ DVD (D:) the message comes up "Please insert a disc into drive (d:)"  even though there is a DVD in the drive, a dvd that plays sometimes and sometimes doesn't.  I am trying to play a region 1 disc and the dvd drive is set for region 1.     The drive is listed under Device manager so it is installed and recognized by the computer.  When I check the DVD drive properties, it displays "This device is working properly".  The driver for the dvd drive is version 5.1.2535.0 and doing a Update driver produces no better match than the one I already have.  I have uninstalled PowerDVD and reinstalled it to no better luck.  I did remove Windows Movie Maker, the free version, and my problems seemed to start at this time.  Did I delete something?  I also did an System Diagnostic and this came up:

What is wrong, did I cause the problem or something else cause the problem (so I will know to not do it again), and how do I fix it?

Hi NDN,

From your log I cannot determine whether the drive has DMA enabled, so do verify this, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 13.
Also jump over to PoweDVD web site and update the software, there were some issue with version 4, I recall a couple of Members mention installing the Demo for version 5 corrected a number of problems. Another issue, update your Direct X.
Lastly Dell has a firmware update for your 616T, howeverr that should be the considered last at the moment.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

CD/RW Link

November 3rd, 2004 15:00

I went to the PowerDVD site and tried to download the upgrade to 5.0 (I have 4.0.11).  That didn't work.

I then followed the link and did the things in section 15, article 13 & 14.  Article 13, the links no longer worked, so I didn't get to do that.  In article 14, I could not tell which channel, primary or secondary, was the proper one for the dvd-drive.  On the secondary channel it already had "DMA if available" in the Transfer mode field.  In the Current Transfer mode field it had "Ultra DMA Mode 2" already in the field.  Both Device 0 and Device 1 had these settings already in them.  In the Primary Channel settings it had Transfer Mode "DMA if available" and Current Transfer Mode "Ultra DMA Mode 5" in the Device 0 fields.  In the Device 1 fields it had Transfer Mode "DMA if available"  and Current Transfer Mode "Not Applicable".

DirectX update:  I did this and I now have version 9.0c and this did not help.  I am sure I had this version already installed a few months ago and my DVD player worked after it was installed.

I downloaded Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility version 1.0.0.1  It gave me this message.  "This decoder is not compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.  To use Windows Media Player 10 to synchronize MPEG-2 encoded content (such as .dvr-ms files and some .avi files) to a portable device, you must install an updated version of the decoder.  To check if an updated version is available from the vendor's web site, click "Check for Update"."  I have Windows Media Player 10.  When a disc does play it plays under PowerDVD controls, not WMP 10.  Also Realplayer, Divx player cannot play anything.

What do I do now?

I have this same problem.  I can read data and music cds but not a DVD.  I have a Dell 4550 2.4 gHz.

I've              updated BIOS from A05 to A08

installed PowerCD 5.002027  (thinking it was a codec for Media PLayer 10)

have hte latest flash for hte Samsung SD-616T   ver F310

and did all that you did.

I always end up with "Please insert disk in to drive D"

If you find out hte answer to this problem please let me know and I'll do likewise.

This seems to be a problem with XP Service Pack 2.  It's a bit drastic, but try uninstalling SP2 and see if the DVD comes back to life.
