DVR/ROM set-up question

Hello all,

My machine was originally configured with two optical drives, a NEC CD-R and a Samsung ROM.  I just replaced by old NEC CD-R with a Pioneer DVR.  This is an OEM model, the install transpired without any problems, the drive works fine.   When I was installing the DVR, I noticed that the currently installed ROM was set as 'slave,' and that the old CD-R was set as 'cable select,' with the CD-R on the cable-end and the ROM in the middle.  I reset the ROM jumper to 'cable select.'  The new DVR drive and old ROM drive are both set as 'cable select,' with the DVR on the cable-end and the ROM in the middle.

The Intel Application Accelerator program reports that the secondary master (DVR) is using a '80-conductor' type cable, while the secondary slave (ROM) is using a '40-conductor' type cable.  Ultra DMA Mode is enabled on both.

I am using Nero 6 Ultra software.  As near as I can figure out, my problem is that I am unable to get the signal from the ROM to the DVR.  Both drives will play DVDs.

Do I need to replace a possibly defective IDE cable?  Do I need to re-set the ROM as 'slave'?  I have checked out Predator's great site for tips and ideas.  Any assistance/thoughts would be appreciated....

TIA,
B4runo

Hi B4Runo,
Had to deal with two lawyers, one irate customer, New Wal-mart, then VDOT, so I am already half confused as it is, so please humor a tired ol`e soul ;)
When you mention signal from ROM to DVR, are you talking about per say copying disc to disc?
Although many will tell you a defective IDE cable is rare, at least replacing it would remove it from the equation if the problem still exists.

Best Regards

Yep, trying to copy disc to disc.  I have several DVDs of family home movies that were given to my wife.  Her uncle transferred the movies to DVD format, I am trying to make a copy of these DVDs, before passing them on to other family members.

I am thinking about changing out the IDE cable, then check it out.  It would be real nice if the computer gods were smiling at me. :smileytongue: Then, if necessary, start messing with the slave/master/cable select jumpers, and cable placement options.  I will most likely re-read your site's section on it, too.

I can certainly understand the confusion with all of your goings on.  I appreciate any more thoughts or comments.

Ciao,

B4runo

B4runo:

I seem to recall that you bought the 80-wire cable when you found out from Pioneer that the DVR-109 required it. Is this a cable select cable?

I believe that it is a cable select cable.  Though, the '40-connector' report from the Intel program makes me wonder.  It is a Mad Dog product (@#$*&^$), I am beginning to question the specs and the QA.  I am going to replace it with another cable, hopefully a more reliable one.

The cable is Mad Dog, or your ROM drive? I once bought a Mad Dog DVD-ROM and ended mad as a dog.

Sorry for the confusion.  My new drive is a Pioneer DVR-109BK, the ROM drive is a Samsung.  The suspect cable is a Mad Dog creation.:smileyindifferent:

Changed out the suspect cable (that MadDog howled, too, osprey4), re-set the jumper on the DVD-ROM to master, set-up the DVD-ROM as master. This is how Dell originally configured my machine with the CD burner as slave.  The DVR is 'CL' as slave, as per original config.  Everything works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smileyvery-happy:  I was able to do some DVD burning of the home movies......

Thanks for your tips and advice.

Great! Thanks for the update. I'm not sure how a manufacturer screws up an IDE cable, but leave it to Mad Dog!
