Dell Inspiron 1520 OS Installation
Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop currently running Windows Vista Home Premium. I have been trying to update to Windows 8, and as my computer does not have a DVD Burner, I have been attempting to use a bootable flash drive. To my knowledge, and based on what the internet says and trying this multiple times, I have concluded that the flash drive is being successfully created.
After I boot from the flash drive, it enters Windows 8 installation, and I go through choosing a Default language and starting the installation, at which point I receive a message stating that CD/DVD drivers are missing, and that I should find the necessary driver through a very helpful browse function they have. I have scoured my hard drive and have not found a driver that works. Based on the suggestions of the internet, I have concluded that I am somehow missing a driver for SATA/AHCI. I have tried booting it with AHCI turned off without any more success. Does anybody here know of where I might find the required driver to install Windows 8?

I presume you've tried a generic Intel SATA pre-OS driver?
This isn't really a disk drives problem, of course. And honestly, I'm not sure what I can suggest other than to continue searching.

Yes, it is in fact the "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing." Sorry, I should have copied that to here verbatim.

Hi,
To my knowledge you can't update from Vista to Windows 8. You would have to upgrade to Windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 8. That's how its always been. Also note that since Vista its been typical for a clean install to complete in around 30 - to 40 minutes, however an upgrade generally takes anywhere between 2 1/2 hours to 4 1/2 hours.

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing" or "A media driver your computer needs is missing" error message when you install Windows

MS says..
This issue occurs for one of the following reasons:•The installation DVD is removed during the setup process.
•A low-quality DVD was used to create the installation DVD.
•The speed at which the installation DVD was burned was too fast.
•The DVD drive cannot read the media.
•The ISO file is corrupted.
HI LXPLOT .. My visit here was by mishap, but I can answer your question. You need to refer to MS Support page listed above which I have read before. .
Typically by my experience— but not always—an installation error regards to a corrupt ISO. So check your ISO using MD5 checksum program. And did you try Mounting the ISO as a Virtual DVD inside of VISTA to install it as an option?
You can mount an ISO using GIZMO TOOL BAR which adds a MD5 Checker to the Context menu, making it very handy. You right mouse click the ISO to check MD5 or to mount the ISO .
Just a note, never do an Express install on any FREEWARE as they tend to install stuff you don't want. Also for Gizmo, don't check the Editor or Database option. I doubt you will need it.

If you find your ISO is good, then I suggest using YUMI boot loader for your USB and it lets you add extra ISOs.. It seems to get past BIOS/UEFI problems I have had, and works on old computers quite well. You need to Format your Drive as FAT32. Yumi is GUI driven and will do that for you.

When you Install window 8/8.1, be prepared to have your KEY handy, be it for Trial or your own key.. For Trial, you will need the GENERIC KEYS..

Just to note, that MS says to remove the Flash Drive, but to install the driver. I also read to do that as a Trick to get thru the install.. Hopefully it doesn't come to that..
Don't forget, Always check your MD5/Sha-1 checksums—it's imperative... I have had more than 1 bad ISO download from Microsoft using their downloader which I understand validates your ISO. Yeah right..
