I installed three HD's in my 530 MT, by removing a 5.25" DVD drive, to free up a SATA port on the motherboard and installed the drive in the optical drive bay using a 5.25' x 3.5" bracket. The few times when a second DVD drive is needed, I use an USB external DVD drive.
I use the two DVD drives together and I have 2 x 500 GB HDDS - I am guessing the easiest way will be to just put a new 1TB in and then copy all the data from the original disk to it.
Any recommendation as to a 1 TB disk as the machine is really a dinosaur by todays standards and I don't want to buy a disk that is incompatible

I already posted the following link to a Western Digital 1tb SATA hard drive, that compatible with the Inspiron 530:-

My favorite solution is an SSD boot drive and a laptop hard drive (for data) mounted over and under in a Silverstone 2.5-to-3.5-inch adapter.
Just sayin'.
