Dell Support Center Hard Drive Test Failed

I have Studio 1737 for approximately 2 years.

I have been trying to figure out if this is something to be concerned about or not.

I ran the Dell Support Center program due to an alert that I needed to do a sceduled hard drive scan.

I ran it a few times and I keep getting the following errors:

Smart Short Self Test Failed: WHD16-VDS

Targeted Read Test Failed: WHD20-32D

Can anyone tell me what this means?

Hi designerlabelgal,

First, I assume your important files are backed up.

What I suggest is that you run the Dell diagnostics to confirm if there is a problem with your hard drive. Boot to your Dell drivers and utilities disc and run the diagnostics from there. You should see an option for a custom test, which allows you to select a single component to test. The hard drive test can take a while; you might want to run it overnight.

Did you test the drive from your Dell drivers and utilities disc? I stress this because it's best to test a device running the test from a separate device.

Thank you so much for responding.  I had seen another posting with a similar situation and did this and all came back perfect.  This is why I questioned the integrity of the results.

Does this mean all is "OK"?

Yes, I placed the disc in the driver.  Booted up, pressed the F12 key and it began the process.  I ran all the tests that I saw.

Ok, a couple things. I think your drive is probably fine. I would check to make sure your copy of the Dell support center is up to date. Also check Dell downloads for an update to your Intel Rapid Storage Technology utility, or check the Intel site. Keeping these two utilities up to date may prevent false positives.

designerlabelgal,

When the tests failed, did you click the details button?  What were the errors reported in the detailed test log?  I would not write these failures off.  The Targeted Read Test is designed to verify a previously encountered failure in a particular sector of the drive.  The SMART Short Self Test (triggered by Dell Support Center but actually provided by the drive manufacturer) seems to confirm the failure.  I would definitely ensure your backups are up to date.  You may want to run the extended hard drive test in Dell Support Center to ensure all failures have been found.  Be sure to list the details reported in the test report as well.  The Details button can be found in the top right of the test results screen in Dell Support Center.

You should run the Dell diagnostics on the drive (F12 at powerup), which will likely confirm that you need a new drive.
