Device in the system modular bay cannot be identified

The modular hard drive bay in my i8100 crashed after working flawlessly for 15 months. Windows XP did a minidump the other day and upon rebooting I got a Dell error screen reading "device in system modular bay cannot be identified”. I reset the bay but received the same message. The problem could be with the hard drive, modular bay, motherboard, or XP. XP boots fine with the modular bay removed. I tried inserting the bay after XP booted and Windows went crazy, with windows opening willy-nilly. Any ideas how to fix this?

what is your device in your modular bay? have you tried putting your modular battery to the place where your modular device sits to check if it's a motherboard problem. if the computer does not go haywire with the battery in on that place, your device is shot.

It's a hard drive modular bay. I did swap the battery and it works fine. However it uses a different motherboard pinout than the hard drive uses. Unfortunately I'm traveling and don't have the floppy module that uses the same pinout as the hard drive.
