DigitalMedia v7 Plus crashes computer during "make compatible"...

I am using DigitalMedia v7 Plus / MyDVD by Roxio, bundled on my XPS 400 Dell desktop:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
System Model Dell DXP051
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 347.98 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

I use DigitalMedia v7 / MyDVD to back up my files on dvd.

I have used it without incident since I purchased my computer 2.5 years ago.

Recently, this is the problem that is occurring:

I drag and drop a folder of files into the "direct to disc" option.

The files are copied without incident.

Then I click on "make compatible".

My computer crashes.

I get a blue screen with the following error message:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check t be sure you adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the drive or check with the manufacturer for drive updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

Beginning dump of physical memory

Physical memory dump complete.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

An error report is sent to Microsoft upon rebooting.

Microsoft responds with this web page:

I have checked my drivers.

All drivers appear to working properly.

I have done a driver reset and a system restore.

I have download and installed PatchGdiPlus from Sonic, and the pxengine2_08_40d from Sonic.

The problem persists.

I would try to do a clean uninstall of DigitalMedia v7 / MyDVD, and reinstall from disc, but I do not understand how to do it correctly, as MyDVD is the only program that shows up in the list of programs in the Windows Add/Remove Programs tool.

DigitalMedia v7 Plus does not appear.

Please advise.

thank you.

Hi, myjob:

The problem program is Drag-to-disc, not DigitalMedia v7 Plus. These are separate programs. My suggestion is to uninstall Drag-to-disc and not use it. Although not as convenient, the XP burning wizard is more reliable, can do multi-session and will give you disc with better compatibility.

osprey4:

Thank you for your response.

Since I originally posted the problem, I've been using a "work around" to finish backing up my files recommended by someone on the CNET forum:

Data to Disc vs. Drag and Drop.

The Data to Disc option works perfectly.

I will try the XP burning wizard, as you recommend, also.

Another CNET user recommended uninstalling Norton, as it is reported to interfere with drag and drop.

Thanks again for your help.

I'm even less a fan of Norton as D-2-D, but please make sure you replace it with a good security program. AVG is free and very well regarded.

osprey...

Just to make sure I understand your post...

Does "D-2-D" mean= DRAG to Disc?

I've been running the AVG free version since day one.

I upgraded to the purchased version a few months ago.

It IS a very good security program.

I don't know how the Norton program got on my computer.

I did not install it purposefully.

I just started getting prompts about 2 weeks ago, asking me to "continue or stop the Norton scan".

I suspect it installed itself, possibly, from a SanDisk Cruzer 2g thumbdrive that I purchased at about that same time...or tagged along with a software program I may have downloaded from the internet.

I dunno.

Whatever the case may be for how it got on my computer, I've uninstalled it.

And AVG remains.

Thanks for your input.

Yes.

Well, looks like another former drag-to-disc user has seen the light! :D
