Dim 2400 becomes Demon 2400
Lost CD drive, lost USB connection, must use on-line keyboard - most of the time keyboard won't work, when it does it freezes the system, 1 of 2 partitions won't allow files to be opened, says I don't have proper access. Software or hardware problem or both ? HELP !!!!!

Hi Unlucky,
Since you are in the Dim-CD/DVD conference lets deal with the CD drive issue.
Go to Device Manager,
To access Device Manager, use any of the following methods:
• Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.
• Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
• Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Click the "+" next to DVD\CD-ROM drives, select the CD drive and click Uninstall, do not restart yet; select the USB hub, click Uninstall, then shutdown.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to section 11, article 2, look for the information on Clearing the NVRAM for the 2400 series. Turn your system on and Clear the NVRAM, now see if the Demon is still stirring...
I am going to assume you have run the diagnostic as well, if not please consider this.
Best Regards!

Hi Unlucky,
Great idea, the Dim-General Hardware has a number of excellent Regulars that frequent the board, you should be in very good hands.
I will check back in later tonight.
Best Regards!

Hi Unlucky,
I am going to assume you do not have the floppy, so you will need to enter the BIOS and turn her off. Same CD/RW link, try Section 20, article 3.
If this does not help, disconnect the optical drive from the IDE cable, reboot the system, still the Demon? Ay chance you can trest your optical drive in another system, rule it out of the equation?
Best Regards!
PS: Although rare, have you tried a new 40-pin/80-conductor IDE cable?

Hi Unlucky,
If it is one of those, same CD/RW again, Section 100, article 31. (Ignore the reference to Roxio)
Tonight I reviewed your post over in the Dim-General Hardware, noticed "ManyDimensions" has responded and he had a similar issue. MD is a good guy and his suggestion may resolve your issue as it did for him. Just a note, its use will erase your data, so be aware and have your files backed up.
Here is a nice site and you should see the link to Dell`s PC Restore:
