Dim 4600 adding Seagate hard drive - new drive not recognized

I bought a Seagate SATA/300 ST3500641AS-RK

It's this one

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?&langId=-1&storeId=10001&splCatType=1&catalogId=10051&productId=169534&cmArea=SC3:CG6:smileyvery-happy:P1928:CL140461:SS1034645

I've got it installed but the new drive isn't recognized.

Do I have to move jumpers on the motherboard?

The motherboard is Intel Desktop Board D865PE

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_confg.htm

or

set the bios on startup?

or

is this the problem?

The old drive is connected using ribbon.

The new Seagate I connected using Interface Cable that came in the box.

Do I need to go buy some kind of adapter?

Thanks for the help.

I forgot to say

I would like to do what you said

make the Seagate the primary via cloning

and then eventually not use the 80gb.

Here is more info from another post of mine.

Thanks for the help.

DuttonFarmer2,

Have you tried booting the 80GB with the 500GB connected to the SATA port 0 and turned on in the BIOS.

As long as the SATA drive is recognized you should be able to clone the drive to the 500GB with no problems.  I orginally had a 200GB PATA (IDE) installed, but I perform hard drive recoveries on that platform and needed more space.  I used Norton Ghost 8.3 to clone from the 200GB to a 1TB drive and it's currently running with no problems.

The actual driver that the SATA is using is the Intel 5.0.1007 driver.

Ryan, I just saw your post.

I have tried booting booting the 80GB with the 500GB connected to the SATA-0 and turned on in the BIOS.

I have also tried using SATA-1

I spent 30 min+ with Seagate on the phone today.

Then I spent 30 min+ with Dell on the phone too.

Right now I do have jumpers on cable select.

Intel drivers can't be updated from the dell site?

Sorry, but you cannot clone an IDE hard drive to a SATA drive, as you have found out, the 4600 was one of the first Dell systems to support SATA and they used a Promise Driver.

You need to install the SATA hard drive as the primary C:/ and reinstall XP, all the drivers and the applications. You need to install the SATA driver, when requested [F6].

When Dell factory installed a SATA hard drive, in a 4600 system, they included the Promise FastTrack S150 TX2 Drivers on a floppy, this driver is not available on Dell's Downloads and Drivers site, you would need to download it from the Promse website.

The directions for reinstalling XP on a 4600 are here

Bev.

It did boot into Windows with 80gb having the 500gb connected

but I can't get it to do that again.

I was using Seagate Diskwizard

cloning the new 500gb hard drive

and I was making partitions

and somewhere in there it froze.

I haven't been able to get back to that point again.

I think I need to zero the SATA drive?

So, when you booted the 80GB having the 500GB connected did it boot into Windows?

If so, then you would need to initialize the drive there under "Disk Management" (right click on my computer and choose "manage").

Once initialized I would restart the system and verify that you're booting the 80GB and can see the 500GB as a second drive letter.

After, I would try to utilize Seagate's software to clone the drive.  The Intel driver is kind of mute, since the SATA is being used in ATA mode.

When you boot (without the Seagate software) just to Windows what happens?  I mean you do get to the desktop or is something else happening?

I just booted with 80gb drive as Primary Master Drive

and made Sata-1 Sata Secondary Drive on Auto

and I got

the black screen with

Dell System Dim 4600i series

Bios Version A12

and some other stuff above that

cursor blinking

Ok, I rechecked my BIOS settings and they are as follows:

Drive Configuration:

SATA Primary Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to "Auto")

Primary Master Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to "Auto")

Hard Disk Drive Sequence:

1. USB device (not installed)

2. System BIOS boot devices

3. Unknown device (not installed)

Boot Sequence:

1. Diskette Drive

2. CD-ROM device

3. Hard-Disk Drive C:

With these settings my SATA drive boots.  My PATA (IDE) changes all the time, since I recover damaged drives.  The PATA drives that are plugged into this port are usually bootable drives, however, my SATA remains the primary boot device in the system.

If you have a floppy drive installed then check your connections both ribbon cable and power cable.

If you don't have a floppy drive in the system or if the drive is dead then turn it off in the BIOS under "Drive Configuration" at the top.

Here is what I set the bios to:

Drive Configuration:

SATA Primary Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to Auto)

Primary Master Drive ...... Hard Drive (after setting to Auto)

Hard Disk Drive Sequence:

1. USB device (not installed)

2. System BIOS boot devices

Boot Sequence:

1. IDE CD-ROM Device

2. Hard-Disk Drive C:

When I do save and exit

I get the

Diskette drive 0 seek failure

and a blinking cursor

I turned off the Diskette Drive A: Not Installed

Save and Exit

went straight in to black screen blinking cursor

then I shut down

 turned off SATA drive

 went into Windows XP okay

Well, it does seem that it's recognizing both drives....  Since the SATA wasn't completely installed then that could be why it stops at the black screen.

Can you try pressing "F12" during POST (Dell Logo screen) to load the boot menu.  Select the "Primary Master drive" in the selection and see if it will boot into Windows with the SATA turned on in the BIOS.

If it doesn't then I would go into "Disk Management" (right click "My Computer" and choose "Manage") and try formatting the 500GB.

Okay I got in !!!

Found New Hardware !!!

WOW

(CDO slides sledgehammer back underneath desk)

Now what do I do?

The 80GB is

39MB FAT

Healthy (EISA Configuration)

Local Disk (C:)

74.46 GB NTFS

Healthy (System)

F Drive Seagate 500GB (F:)

465.76 GB NTFS

Healthy (Active)

The problem I had cloning in Seagate Wizard the last time

may have been when I tried to partition.

Ok,

For starters....  Go ahead and "reformat" the partition (right click format)  allow all the defaults (NTFS) and select the checkbox for "quick format"

Let me download the Seagate software and run through the cloning real quick so that I can tell you exactly what to do.  =)

Be back in a few...

Ok,

Well I downloaded Seagate Disk Wizard (Acronis) (about 104MB).  Booted the PATA and started the install.  It wanted a "reboot" upon completion.

Done.

I chose to "clone" the drive from the older (mine 500GB) to (mine 1TB).  Make sure you allow it to DELETE THE TARGET PARTITIONS (if any)  You need to make sure you choose "MANUAL" for expert users.  Choosing "automatic" wanted to mimic the original drive making the target the same size.  I'm sure you want to utilize your whole drive so choose "manual".  It wanted to reboot again and is now performing the cloning with the Windows blue start up background (never seen this other than running chkdsk before. =) ).

It seemed to take quite a bit of time at the beginning when "checking partitions", but it finally moved on.

It's rolling as we speak, but I'm at 3% hehe
