Dimension 4500 install new HDD

I picked up a hitachi 250GB disk and would like to replace my 40GB boot drive, then use the boot drive as a share on my home network.  I formated it first from ther disk manager software it arrive with (137GB) then copied the disk.  137G was available with the 30 or so GB of stuff from the 40G drive, the rest could have been partitioned with windows.  But this drive was not bootable.  I am now reformatting with XP home SP2.  It seems like when complete it will see the entire volume.
How can I make this a boot drive without reinstalling the whole shooting match.  If I try to use my original restore CDs, they're an XP release before SP1 so say no to 250BG.
