Dimension 8200 & LG GSA-4166B DVD/CD rewriter problems
I have a dimension 8200 and am trying to upgraded my CD rewriter to a DVD/CD rewriter (LG GSA-4166B). My system also has a second drive (DVD reader).
I have fitted the 4166 which does not open or show any lights, also, 'my computer' shows the 4166 as 'axv cd/dvd rom scsi cdrom device'.
I have followed guidance as best I can (given my limited knowledge of computers) and have cleared NVRam (both via the BIOS and 'hard reset').
Initially I did a straight swap (my new dvd writer for the old dvd, using the original IDE cable and jumper on 'cs', as was, with my other DVD reader using the second position (as was) on the IDE cable (jumper also on 'cs'). The BIOS on 'auto' for both drives.
I then swapped the position of the drives around on the IDE cable - also used the IDE cable that comes with the 4166.
I have also tried installing the 4166 on its own ('master' position on jumper), and also different combinations of 'master' & 'slave' jumpers (also swapping IDE cables).
Am I missing something simple here? or am I doomed? I would appreciate any help, thanks

Hi Pete,
At this point I would suggest you start fresh. Disconnect both drives, leave the IDE cable off and I would use Dell`s.
Boot your system normally and let Windows Load, shutdown. Boot once more and Clear the NVRAM, shut down. Use Cable Select jumper settings.
Connect only the new drive to the Dell cable, using the "End" connection of the IDE cable, boot enter the BIOS and verify that the drive is ON, save/exit. Windows restarts, is the drive detected now?
If not, shutdown and test your current good drive you were leaving in the PC, use the "End" connection, did this drive work? If the anwers were No for the first one and yes for the second one, then unfortunately you may have received a bad drive straight out of the box.
Best Regards

Yes your system has the proper ATA (EIDE) bus. I installed a new Plextor in one of my co-workers 8200 one day last week.
Take care,
Jeff
