Disc drive not recognized in docking station
Aright, I have an inspiron 300m with a docking station that includes a cdrw/dvdrw drive. It's been working fine ever since I got it, but recently has stopped recognizing the cd drive. I've tryed un-docking and re-docking the system, upgrading bios, and inserting cds with no luck. I don't have the manual with me so I forget how I installed the drive/docking station in the first place. Why did the computer just decide to not recognize the drive anymore? Should I try re-installing the drive/docking station?
Thanks.

Please follow the steps mentioned below:
Inspect the docking connector on the system and the dock for bent pins. If there appears to be damage to the connector, determine the extent of the damage.
Reseat the CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. -
Remove and reseat the CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drive.
NOTE: Refer to the Users Guide for your computer for instructions on removing/replacing drives.
Test the drive in the media bay of the system undocked.
Undock the system and test the drive from the docking stations media bay in the systems media bay. This would help verify the drive failure if there is any.
NOTE: For instructions on how to remove and reseat components, refer to the Removing and Replacing Parts section of the system Users Guides

Rahul - Can you explain how to test the cd drive in the media bay of a 300m, given that the 300m is a single spindle machine and does not have a media bay. Perhaps you are referring to the media "BASE"?
Looks like someones cutting and pasting from scripts, same as the Dell forum moderators...
What are your next suggestions, try flashing the bios (again) and tighting the screws beneath the system?

Hi
Snapohead, what a thing to say............( I dont dissagree ! )
Have you tried the CD drive on the cable to the back of the machine ? It may be a faulty drive. Do you have a floppy to test in the media base ?

I tryed re-seating the cd drive, it spins up and everything, but the computer just doesn't allow me to access the cd drive. The connector to the media base is fine, no damage. There's no media bay in the 300m, only in the docking station, and I don't have a floppy drive to test either. I'm thinking it would probably work if I re-installed the drive like I had to do when I first got the system. The problem is I don't have the users manual with instructions on how to do this. Could I find these instructions online somewhere or does someone know how to do this?
Thanks for your help guys.

Hi,
What you may want to do next, try to boot from the CD, do an F12 when booting to change the order, or change it in Bios. The resource CD is a bootable one ( so is the OS re-install disk, you can stop before a re-install, the Diags are safer ) with diags, if this works the issue is not hardware. If no go it probably is.
