Disk Cleanup not completing

When I run Disk Cleanup on my Windows XP system, it does not run to completion. I am allowing it to run for 24 hours before canceling. The whole 24 hours it indicated calculating free space, while it was scanning compressed old files. My hard drive is a 80 GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA. After canceling I checked Task Manager, because of degraded performance, CLEANMGR.EXE was still running utilizing 99% of the CPU Resources. To terminate, I was required to perform the Task Manager's End Process procedure. Is did expected, normal, and it will run for more than 24 hours, or is it a indication of a probelm.

Thank you

whats the reason you are doing a disc clean up ?The CPU reources would not change by doing a disc clean up.

could be something like

arasite Programs; Adware, Spyware, and Stealth Networks
Programs are being intentionally packaged with legitimate software to display advertising on your screen, gather information on your browsing habits, and to sell your unused CPU cycles and disk space. Current applications are relatively benign but could easily be used for an invasion of privacy or other malicious purposes.

Navin Kurian, spyware and adware was present. I decided to install a full version of SpyHunter v 1.5.81 from Enigma Software Group. I have completed the scan and removal of the parasites. System security, protection, and defense software has taken on a new meaning for me. I am running Anti-Virus, a Firewall and now SpyHunter. Thank you for your assistance.

Everything I've read about Spyhunter suggests that it is often as bad as the scumware it claims to get rid of.  See the following:

I am having the exact same problem as this writer.  I did not, however, check the resources being used and all that, but did let it run overnight and nothing ever happened.  I do not really understand what was written here about spyware and how that would interfere with disc cleanup.  I have spybot seek and destroy on my computer and keep it updated.  My hard drive (40GB) is 2/3 full and I am trying to clean some things off of it.  I have deleted unused programs, backed up files and family photos to CD's and run defrag.  I thought cleanup would help with other files, but it isn't doing anything.  Any suggestions.

Disc Cleanup will often appear to be stuck while looking for Old Files to COmpress. . to cure this you can edit the registry ( Start . . Run . . regedit) . . click on Edit . . Find and type Compress Old Files . . when it finds the key, delete the three lines in the right had screen . . One will come back with different string, but that is ok.

Close regedit and then run Disc Cleanup . . see if it goes faster.

Be sure and make a restore point prior to editing the registry in case something goes wrong you can restore.
