Driver install program hangs

I have a Vostro 1500 a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632H cd device.  It just started not reading cds.  When I try to view files on a cd I get an error "E:\ The server threw an exception".  I thought I would install the latest firmware so I downloaded the R205571 flash firmware patch.  When I run Tsdnwin.exe and enter the firmware file name and click Download, the program doesn't do anything.  It just seems to hang.  I tried running it in Safe Mode but still the same problem.  Does this mean my cd drive is toast or is there something else I can try to reload the driver to see if that fixes my problem?

Thanks  - Jeff

Re: Driver install program hangs

Does the drive appear in My Computer?  If yes, then try running
the Dell Diagnostics on the drive.  The Diagnostics should be on
your hard drive.  Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the
screen.  This will take you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition
or Diagnostics will be a choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drives
and have a data CD (not music CD) ready for the read test.

Re: Driver install program hangs

Yes, the drive appears in My Computer.  What's funny is when I click on the drive E I get the message 'Windows Explorer has stopped reworking ... restarting".  Ran the diagnostics and the drive says it is working fine.  I was going to try installing the new driver since an updated one exists and I thought it was worth a try.  But Tsdnwin just seems to hang after I enter the filename and tell it to download.  Maybe the drive is broken even though the diagnostic passes?

Re: Driver install program hangs

Firmware is not a driver.  The driver is supplied by
the Operating System and it is there and installed.

If you ran the Diagnostics and the drive read the disc,
it is functioning correctly.  The error you are receiving
indicates something other than the drive is causing a
problem.

Clicking the drive (with a data disc inserted) and receiving
"'Windows Explorer has stopped working ... restarting" is
an indication of an Operating System possible problem.

As for the Firmware, clicking Tsdnwin.exe should run and
there should be no need to type anything.

Thus far, from what you have posted, there does not seem
to be a CD drive problem.

Re: Driver install program hangs

That's a really good point.  I was just grasping at straws when I thought of updating the firmware.  I have Vista and tried updating the driver software through the Device Manager but apparently my driver software is already uptodate.  Should I try removing and reinstalling the driver?  And if so, how do I do that?  Thanks for your help!

Re: Driver install program hangs

You could uninstall the Drive in the Device Manager
and then reboot.  It will rewrite the driver.  I do
not think that will help, but it will not harm.

The driver is a generic Microsoft driver and all optical
drive use the same one.

Are there other problem with the system?

Re: Driver install program hangs

Right again - I uninstalled the drive and rebooted and still have the same problem.  The rest of the system works fine.  Google-ing the drive, Tsst Corp TS-L632h, other people have reported problems.  Maybe there is a conflict with something else on the system.
