EMPREX DVD DUAL 8X INCOMPATIBLE?
Hello to everyone
I recently bought a DVD burner to upgrade my Dell Dimension 2400. It was on offer in PC World, EMPREX DVD DUAL RW 8X. Ever since I installed it I have been having major problems in booting up. At the very final stage of the boot up process, with the "pale-blue" screen saying "welcome" the computer crashes and what is more annoying (if possible) is that it seems to happen at random. What I mean is that the boot up process can go well 10 times and then apparently for no reason the computer starts to crash many many times consecutively
I get a blue screen with a white message saying:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and then an error code:
stop: 0x0000000A(0x00000018,0x00000002,0x8050d2c3)
it says to try uninstalling the new hardware or software and to try and disable cache memory (I dunno what this is or how to do it or what the consequences would be), and finishes with a dump of physical memory
I did the procedure suggested by the technical assistance of dell to riconfigure the IDE drivers
Enter Bios Set Up
NUM LOCK SCROLL LOCK CAPS LOCK on
NUM LOCK SCROLL LOCK CAPS LOCK off
ALT+E
ALT+F
ESC
save & exit but the error happened again
I rebooted in safe mode, then rebooted in normal mode and happened again.............
Then I rebooted in safe mode, disabled the DVD/RW, turned off and rebooted again.
The boot up process went well but I cannot be sure what I did caused it to go well since, as I said earlier this seems to be happening at random!

I attach the link to the microsoft online crash analysis but it is useless

I have already used the "liveupdate" program indicated in the DVD box to update the driver. I run Windows XP and all the critical patches and Service Packs 1 and 2 have been fully installed

Roberto:
Please post back and explain what IDE devices you have (hard drives, CD/DVD, etc.), and how they are connected. Did you make sure to jumper the new drive in the CS position? Have you tried unplugging the new drive to see if your boot problems are solved?

Hello Osprey and thank you so much for your kind attention
Let me try to answer to your questions
I have the original 40G internal hard disk, the original CD/RW to which I added an external USB2 40G hard disk and then recently this EMPREX DVD RW. I also have an external Iomega Zip drive connected via parallel port.
I have run the "belarc advisor" provided by crucial to try and be more specific.
Here is what it reported under Drives:
80.00 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
23.23 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
DVDRW IDE1108 [CD-ROM drive]
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]
IMG VP0 [Hard drive] -- drive 1
SAMSUNG MP0402H USB Device [Hard drive] (40.06 GB) -- drive 2
ST340014A [Hard drive] (40.00 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 3JX6MBFJ, rev 3.16,
Ths DVD I added uses the same ATA cable of the original CD to be connected. As far as the jumpers are concerned, the new DVD came pre-set in slave position and that is how I had it connected. After reading your message I opened the pc again and noticed that the original CD was set in the CS (or CSEL)....may have this been the problem? I have now set them both on CS since I read somewhere on the web that both hard drives on a controller must support CS and have the jumper set to CS....
By the way as a by-product of this check, I rebooted the PC after disconnecting the new DVD and to my bewilderment the problem happened again..........
thank you again for your kind attention
Best regards
Roberto

Hard to say but it may be a coincidence that this happened when you installed the new drive. First, make sure your two optical drives are properly recognized in system setup. Normally, I recommend putting a DVD burner in the master position (end connector) and ROM drive in the slave position (middle connector, both would still be jumpered to CS). Do this then check system setup.
If that does not help, unplug the new drive and perform a system restore to a point before the drive was installed. Does that make the error go away?
