ERROR Code: 0F00:136C(Please Help)

I'm not able to boot up my operating system. Instead I get a blue screen, I tried starting the system up in safe mode but I just get a list of things that really mean nothing instead of the OS loading up. I ran the diagnostics and I get the error....:

ERROR Code: 0F00:136C
Msg: IDE device failed: Blank media or nomedia is present in optical drive. Test requires media with digital data (Resource CD, Installation CD)

I'm pretty sure this has to do something with the hard drive, I think by reformatting the laptop (inspiron 1000) that it will fix that problem. But what i want to know is if there is anyway of recovering the data on the hard drive. Any help or insite on this problem will be much appreciated.

The error pertains to the CD/DVD writer and simply means you didn't have a writeable disc in the drive to test.

Re-run the diags on the hard drive, this time doing the extended test (takes 90-120 min or so).

Also the Blue Screen error is
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Technical Information:  *** STOP 0x000000ED (0x81296A88, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I actually fixed the problem no more then 15mins ago. The problem was that my boot.ini was messed up. So to fix that problem I had to get the cd-rom to boot before the hard drive. Then enter my XP cd and click r for repair.
Then type "chkdsk  /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter

It booted up just like it was before. Without me having to erase any data on the hard drive.
