Error Code: 0F00: 1A44

I have been getting nothing but a blue screen telling me that a registry cannot be opened or run. I did a complete diagnostic scan on my computer (after talking with a Dell tech support technician who had me do only a few scans)  and got only these two notices:
 
Error code: 0F00:0244
Msg: Block 46091751: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.
 
Error code: 0F00 1A44
Msg: Block 46091751: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.
 
Before hanging up with the technician I was told it was a software problem and it would cost $99 dollars for a technician to walk me through it. I am unable to pay that but I was also told to scout around on here to see if I could find a solution. I found something else. A few people have had this same (or similar) problem and one was told that it was a hard drive problem and to contact Dell for a replacement. So, which is it, a software problem ( that can only be fixed if I shell out money I really don't have), or a hard drive problem (that can be fixed with a replacement)?

It depends on the model and size of hard drive - they run as little as about $70 or as much as a couple of hundred dollars.

You have absolutely no way of knowing when a hard drive will fail, so the only guarantee is called a backup. That said, most notebook drive makers offer at least a 3-year warranty on their drives -- and Seagate offers five - so even if it fails, you won't have any out of pocket replacement costs.

It's a hardware problem - the hard drive is failing and must be replaced before you reinstall.

Ok what is your advice on making sure it doesnt happen again and how much will it cost?

Thank you for your help. One last question: To get the replacement hard drive should I contact Dell or the company that made it?

If your laptop is still within warranty and then you should contact Dell. If it is not then I suggest you get your hard drive from somewhere like  http://www.zipzoomfly.com  where the cost of the hard drive would be cheaper than the equivalent model from Dell parts department.

I am also getting a diagnostic code of 0F00-1A44. From everything I have read here it is a slam dunk that a HDD change is required. The new question that I have not seen asked is: Can the existing drive be salvaged by reformatting it?

Only if you like taking chances. The odds are overwhelming the bad sectors will continue to propagate - until the drive is no longer useable.

If you decide to chance it, keep backups - you'll need them before too long.
