Thank you for your reply and my apologies for not responding for over a week....
I have a Dell Inspiron, maybe model 660
I attached this external hard drive to a Dell laptop running Windows 8 and it was recognized immediately. I could open the files and see everything in the disk.
Then I connected to Dells support yesterday and installed some BIOS upgrade.
Now I hear the correct sound when I plug the external HD USB cable to a front USB port, but the disk does not appear on the "Tis PC" list. In fact, I have a new device that is a "Removable Disk" that wants me to enter a disk when I double click it .
When I unplug the external hard disk USB cable, I again here the correct sound, but the "Removable Disk" stays.
A removable disk appears now in (D) appears now among the Devices and Drives under "This PC" . It is there even when I unplug the external hard disk USB cable, although I have only a C: drive and a DVD (E)drive.
However when I look at the device manager, whenever I plug the external HD USB cable I see a new device that reads:
" VLI product string
Driver Error "
The external HD is Seagate Barakuda 1500GB. I am not sure if I have to look for a new windows 10 driver for it or for the ATA to USB adapter that I use. Any idea?
I thought that all drivers that worked in WIndows 8 should be compatible with windows 10 !
As the saying goes, your mileage may vary with Win 8 versus 10 drivers. I'm not really sure what to suggest. What is the exact error in device manager?
I just tried to connect an old MP3 player that never had any problem until I upgraded my Windows 8 to windows 10. It is behaving exactly the same. I hear the right sound but nothing appears on my "This PC" devices and drives.
Luckily I can still connect my cellphone through the USB.

Hi ghaas,
What model is your Dell? If you plug this into another system, does it show up?

Do I have a driver that does not fir Windows 10?
